D.C. 1898. Printed color. 10¼X13½. Intensely detailed chart of
western Alaska by the U. S.
Geological Survey shows the nature of Alaska's geological base
rock formations with a colored table depicting 11 different materials
from Pleistocene and Neocene to Volcanic rocks and Intrusive rocks
(granite). Early Tertiary. Colors on the
Legend correspond to colors on the chart. A vertical drawing on left
side of chart shows a section “On Line”
from the Sushitna River to the Tordrillo Mountains down to the Yukon
River and Stuart island. Along the coast the chart shows Norton Sound
with a U. S. Military Base, to the Stolin Strait and thence over to Cook's River. A
fine Survey. |

of Alaska shows it's boundary with the Yukon and Judicial Division
Boundaries, towns, settlements, lakes rivers and mountains. Locates
Wireless Telegraph Stations, Kotzebue and Norton Sounds, Kodiak Island,
Anchorage and the entrance to Cook's River. Includes the Aleutian
Islands, the Arctic Coast and the Bering Strait. Also the Pacific
Northwest coast from Juneau south to the Dixon Entrance. A fine map with
excellent detail. From C. S. Hammond's “New World Atlas.”

“Sketch by Compass of Port Banks.1787.”
London. 1788. Colored.
15¼X11. George Dixon (c.1755-1800) was a navigator in the Royal Navy who
accompanied Capt. James Cook on his 3rd voyage to the Pacific in
1776-1780. On his return to England he was made a Captain before setting
off again on a commercial voyage to America's Pacific Northwest coast in
the ship “Queen Charlotte” to explore the coast of British Columbia for
the fur trade and for exploration. During the voyage he discovered and
charted Queen Charlotte's Island, Port Mulgrave, Norfolk Bay & Dixon's
Archipelago. This chart of Port Banks, which he named for Sir Joseph
Banks (1743-1820) President of the Royal Society in London and who had
accompanied Cook on his first voyage to the Pacific (1768-1771, is
located in Sitka Sound. and depicts coastal contours, Sea Otter Point,
anchorages and Point Lauder with a few depth soundings. The chart was
published in “A Voyage Round the World” for John Stockdale and engraved
by J. Reid, a well known London engraver. When his sea duty ended,
George Dixon retired to Gosport, near Portsmouth in England, where he
became a teacher of navigation and was the author of “The Navigator's
Assistant” published in 1791. (Ref. The Oxford Companion to Ships and

soundings, courses & navigational notes. Includes both hydrographic and
topographic details. Chart was used aboard the Escort Carrier “Mission
Bay” in World War II. Chart #8551.(Folds but clean condition.) |

U. S. GOVERNMENT “Sketch Map of Alaska to Accompany Annual Report of the
Governor of Alaska. 1897.”
Wash. D.C. 1897. Colored outlines. 14¼X22. This finely detailed
lithograph of Alaska was drawn from a sketch published by Norris Peters
in Washington, D.C. The map shows the extent of Alaska bordered by Canada's British Provinces to the East and the Behring Strait dividing
it from Russian Siberia in the West. Includes primary harbors and
settlements, rivers and Forts in the Yukon and depicts the Aleutian
Islands in detail along with the Pribolof Islands of St. George and St.
Paul in the Behring Sea which were at one time the site of Russian
factories. This is an excellent sketch map of Alaska as it appeared at
the end of the 19th century. |

topographical and hydrographical details and includes a note saying
“Sanborn Harbor is a secure anchorage in all winds. There are no hidden
dangers. Driftwood and good water are easily obtained and abundance of
salmon and trout in season.” This excellent chart was drawn by H.
Lindenkohl. |

map includes a mileage scale & the topography was drawn by T. G. Gerdine
& Alfred H. Brooks. in 1901. An excellent geological survey. |

19X25. This is a splendid map of Alaska showing it's eastern border with
the Dominion of Canada, and it's western coast on the Bering Strait. It
depicts all the Judicial Divisions with an inset at base of map of the
Aleutian Islands noted as the 3rd Judicial Division. The map shows
roads, rivers, mountain ranges, railways and bays and harbors around the
coast, & down the left side is a listing of
principal cities and towns giving their population figures. A fine and
colorful map. |

1869. Colored. 24X34. Large handsome chart of Alaska that includes the
Yukon Territory and part of America's Pacific Northwest coast, depicts
the Aleutian Islands, Kadiak Island, Cook's River, Prince William Sound,
Mt. St. Elias, the Rocky Mountains, and the Bering Strait and Russia's
Eastern Siberia Territory. An inset in top right shows the Aleutian
Islands in fine detail, and depth soundings are indicated through the
Bering Strait to the Arctic Ocean. As this chart was drawn & prepared
for navigators sailing to and around Alaska's coastal regions, it is
finely detailed and locates bays and inlets, rivers and harbors, points,
capes and offshore islands. The U. S. Coast Survey charts were noted for
their excellence in the 19th century and this is one of their finest. |

map depicts the primary harbors around Alaska's coastline including the
Aleutian Islands. The map shows volcanoes and mountain ranges including
the Rocky Mountains and the Mackenzie River, and in top right is an
inset chart of the Bering Sea with it's islands below the Bering Strait.
At the base of the chart ia a table listing population figures,
districts, chief cities & the Klondike Region. A very nice map. |

map of Alaska in the late 19th century, shows all major towns & harbors,
& the border between Alaska and the Northwest Territory & the Mackenzie
River. The map depicts the Aleutian Islands, Cook's River, Prince
William Sound and Port Valdez. Includes the Bering Strait and the Arctic
Ocean. The map was published in “Gaskell's Atlas of the World” in 1886.
A very good and colorful map. |

Colored. 33½X43½. This fine large survey shows the condition of surveys
by the U. S. Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1925. It depicts the area from
the Bering Sea to the Arctic Ocean & south to the Gulf of Alaska & the
North Pacific Ocean, & includes the Aleutian Islands. Locates the
Kuskokwim River, Kodiak, Seward, Anchorage, Valdez & Cordova & depicts
the Yukon River, Fairbanks & Nenana in the inland regions. Includes 2
inset charts 1.) Southeast Alaska from Whitehorse down to Juneau,
Wrangell, Ketchican & Prince Rupert, & 2.) The Aleutian Islands with
Attui & Kiska Islands. This is a splendid chart from the U. S. Coast &
Geodetic Survey. |

coast from Malaspina Glacier to Yakutat Bay to Cape Fairweather, Cross
Sound, Sitka, to Chichegot Island to Chatham Strait & Federica Sound, to
Prince of Wales Island & Dixon Entrance. Depicts Mount St. Elias, Mount
Vancouver, Mount Cook & Mount Aylesworth with lines of survey connecting
all the mountains that form the backbone of Alaska's southeast coastal
region. Colors on the map indicate areas surveyed, others partly
surveyed & changeable areas surveyed & requiring future surveys. This
handsome survey was published for the Annual Report of the Director of
the Coast & Geodetic Survey in 1925. |

The Japanese
Occupation of the Aleutian Islands in WWII lasted from June 3, 1942
to October 1943. In early June of 1942 the Japanese Admiral Yamamoto
directed a Carrier raid on Dutch Island, Unalaska, the only American
Naval & Seaplane Base in the Aleutians & at the same time had his
forces take 3 virtually unoccupied islands - Kiska, Attu & Adak with
1800 troops. After intermittent, but continuous air & sea
bombardments by the American forces against the islands of Kiska,
Attu & Adak, the Japanese were finally cleared out of the Aleutians
by October of 1943. The following charts represent the areas
involved in the Japanese/American operations in the Aleutian Islands
in WWII.
