Finely detailed chart of the island of Newfoundland showing harbors around the coast & locating Havre St. Jean (now the capital city St. John's) on the southeast coast & Baye de la Trinite (Trinity Bay) & Baye De Plaisance (Placentia Bay) along with Cap de Raze (Cape Race) at the southernmost point on the island. A note across the island says that the interior which is little known, is filled with mountains, woods & lakes. Chart also shows the northern tip of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island) and all of Isle St. Jean (Prince Edward Island); the Gaspe Peninsula & Anticosti Island. Compass rose in center has rhumb lines radiating across chart & title in top left is in a decorative cartouche with scroll & leaf motifs.

Harbors are noted around the bays but land areas are indicated either as unknown or settled by Indian tribes & shown as mountainous or dotted with lakes. Includes decorative rococo title cartouche in top right with leaf, flower & scroll motifs.

Finely engraved chart shows Port Dauphin & Baye St. Anne on the eastern shore of Cape Breton Island (Isle Royale). Depicts the Labrador Channel entering below the Bay; Isles Siboux offshore, & mountains to the north west called Le Quatre Fils Aymond (the 4 sons of Aymond.) Many depth soundings appear in the channels along with shoal areas. Capes, bays & points. A compass rose is shown with radiating rhumb lines & the chart includes a lettered table indicating points of interest in the Bay and Port.

Attractive small chart from the American Coast Pilot, shows the island off the coast of Nova Scotia surrounded by many very detailed soundings. A pond appears in center and a long landfall approach view with rocky terrain is shown at the base of the chart titled Eastern End of the Isle of Sable taken from the Southward. Compass Rose shows both magnetic and true North with a variation of 14 W.

Very decorative map with ornamental border frame, shows Northeast Canada bordering the United States and depicts many towns & settlements and Indian territories. Includes the Great Seal of Canada, and a scene of native Indians sitting on the ground looking up at a warrior on a hillside above them, and a view of Quebec with sailing vessels in the Harbor, with the fortified city behind them. An attractive map, finely engraved.

CAN187 - S. A. MITCHELL "Map of Ontario in Counties. Phila. 1871. Colored. 11X13½. Colorful map shows Lakes Ontario, Erie and Huron with Georgian Bay, Manitoulin Bay and Saginaw Bay. Ontario is outlined in red with its counties in different colors. Locates Toronto and all principal cities, towns & settlements. Depicts railroads crossing the region and shows the St. Lawrence River flowing into Lake Ontario from the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the map includes the adjoining regions of New York State, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan locating Detroit and Lake St. Clair. A decorative border frame makes this a very attractive map. From Mitchell's New General Atlas containing maps of the Various Countries of the World. 1871.

CAN192 - A. H. PETERMANN Provisorische karte von Lieut. Schwatka's Expedition. Zur. Aufsuchung der Reste Sir John Franklin's Expedition auf King William Land. 1879-1880. Gotha. 1880. Colored. 10X7¼. Small but very detailed chart shows explorers routes to Canada's Northwest Territories above Hudson's Bay. Locates Victoria Strait, King William Land (afterwards Prince of Wales Land,) Boothia & the Adelaide Peninsula. Shows the tracks of Sir John Franklin's expedition 1845-47, when he attempted to find a northwest passage from the Atlantic to the North Pacific, but he died in the attempt when his ship became trapped in the ice. Lieut Schwatka's expedition took place at the end of the 19th century after which this chart was included in August Henry Petermann's Geographische Mittheilungen”. Published by Justus Perthes in 1880.

Very detailed chart in 5 sections shows individual charts outlining the discoveries of 6 explorers to Canada's Northern Arctic Territories above Baffin's Bay from 1616-1861. 1.) Bylot & Baffin. July 1616, 2.) Ross. Aug. 1818, 3.) Inglefield, Aug/Sept. 1852, 4.) Kane 1853-1855, 5.) Hayes. Aug. 1860-July 1861. August Petermann, who drew these charts, was an expert in the geography of the Arctic and had a bay named for him on the coast of Grinnel Land. Born in Germany in 1822, he moved to London in 1847 where he drew maps published by himself and others, and in 1854 he moved back to Germany and joined the Justus Perthes publishing company where he issued his famous Geographische Mittheilungun a geographical journal that became world famous. This excellent map was included in his Journal in the 1887 edition.

Fine map of Manitoba bordered by Ontario in the East and Saskatchewan in the West, depicts Winnipeg with railroads leading to the city, and Lake Winnipeg in center locating points and islands throughout it's length. The map indicates land divisions in detail with towns, settlements, forests and many lakes across the region. Includes an insert in top right of the Northern Part of Manitoba. From C. S. Hammond's New World Atlas.

CAN204 - J. LODGE “New and Accurate Chart of Hudson's Bay in North America.” London. 1782. Colored. 7X9.Attractive small map shows the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the St. Lawrence River, part of Nova Scotia (present day New Brunswick) Labrador, James and Hudson's Bays, Hudson's Strait and Cape Walsingham. Around Hudson's Bay is a “New Discovered Sea”, the Severn River and Fort Severn, York Fort, River Nelson and Cape Churchill, Repulse Bay and Cary's Swan's Nest. Also locates Davis's Strait and Groenland (Greenland) with Frobisher's Straits. Map has a decorative compass rose and was published in the Political Magazine in London, on November 1782. Engraved by John Lodge, a prominent London 18th century engraver.

CAN205 - BRITISH ADMIRALTY “Chart of Part of the Coast of Nova Scotia From Documents in the Hydrographical Office of the Admiralty.” London. 1825. B/W. 24½X37½. Fine chart shows Cape Sable Island and Cape Sable, Bon Portage Islands, Bear Island, Mutton Islands, Seal Island, Mud Island and the southeastern coast of Nova Scotia from Pubnico Sound to Barrington and Barrington Bay. Locates many areas of “Overfalls”. “Overfalls” are strong breakers caused by winds and currents over irregular bottoms or by currents meeting. Tide rips & tide races frequently cause “Overfalls” such as those indicated on this chart. A number of hydrographical features on the chart are derived from J. F. W. Des Barre's charts of Nova Scotia published in his “Atlantic Neptune” (1774-1781,) and notes on depth soundings give credit to Des Barre's surveys. In top right are detailed Sailing Directions for 1. Seal Island which is covered with scrubby trees, 2, Pubnico is an excellent ship harbor, 3. Barrington Bay has ‘extensive flats’ requiring careful navigation, 4. Bonneta Cove has good anchorages, 5. Shag Harbor is full of shoals, 6. Cape Sable is a low sandy island and the cliffs to the westward are white etc. This is a fine early 1st. edition British Admiralty chart with attractive title calligraphy.

Note: The following maps were all drawn from manuscript surveys brought back to Paris by Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) a Jesuit Priest who explored Canada and North America’s eastern, southern and Gulf Coast regions between 1705 and 1720. The manuscript maps were deposited in the Dept. de la Marine in Paris and were engraved under the direction of J. N. Bellin, (1703-1722.) the Royal Hydrographer to the King in Paris. They were ultimately published in Charlevoix’s “L’Histoire et Description Generale de la Nouvelle France” in 1744.

Attractive map shows the Bay of Chedabouctou on Nova Scotia’s eastern coast close to the Canceau Passage between Nova Scotia (Accadie) and (Isle Royale). Chedabouctou was also named Milfort Harbor. Harbor contours are clearly defined and show a town (Le Bourg) a Fort, anchorages, the River de Saumons, Ance a l’Anne, Cap Rouge and I.Madam. Compass rose with decorative fleur-de-lys is situated in the Bay area. A fine map.

This finely engraved chart shows Port Dauphin on the northeast coast of Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island) with the entrance at Cap Dauphin and the Isle Siboux offshore. An inset in top left shows Fort Dauphin and it's battlements & gun batteries, built to defend the harbor. Chart also depicts the entrance to Labrador (the Bras D'Or Lakes) for small vessels sailing in the area. A large compass rose with radiating rhumb lines is positioned in sea area at the entrance to the harbor. A fine chart.

CAN218 - P. F. X. de CHARLEVOIX/J. N. BELLIN “Carte Des Bayes, Rades et Port de Plaisance dans L'Isle De Terre Neuve.Dressee sur Les Manuscrits du Depot des Cartes, Plans et Journaux de la Marine. Par. N. B. Ingenieur du Roy et de la Marine. 1744.” Paris. 1744. B/W. 7¾X11. Fine chart shows the entrance to the harbor of Plaisance on the south coast of Newfoundland. Depth soundings are shown in the Bay and Roads for vessels navigating the waterways and entering from the sea around the Grand Banks. Land contours are clearly delineated. The shore is shown dotted with low scrub areas and a decorative compass rose with fleur-de-lys pointer is centered on the chart. Engraved by Dheulland under the direction of the Royal Hydrographer, Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772.)

CAN224 - J. GREENLEAF “Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.” Boston. 1842. Colored. 10½X12½. Finely engraved map shows the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the entrance to the St. Lawrence River. Depicts Cape Breton Island, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador with the Straits of Belle Isle dividing it from Newfoundland's northwestern coast. The map shows cities, towns, harbors and settlements and includes Sable Island and the Banks of Banquero, Green, Sable, Whale and the Great Bank of Newfoundland offshore. Engraved by Thomas Illman and Edward Pillbrow, the map was included in “A New Universal Atlas” compiled by Jeremiah Greenleaf (1791-1864) published in 1842. Very good condition with original color.

CAN225 - J. GREENLEAF “West Part of Canada.” Boston. 1842. Colored. 10½X12½. Contrary to the title the map is actually of northeastern Canada and shows Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario with counties depicted in different colors. The map includes cities, towns, harbors and settlements as well as Indian Territories and Manitoulin Lake off Lake Huron and the Thunder Bay Isles. The map was finely engraved by Thomas Illman and Edward Pillbrow and included in “A New Universal Atlas” compiled by Jeremiah Greenleaf (1791-1864) published in 1842. Very good condition with original color.

Depicts cities, towns and harbors, mountains, and rivers and includes 2 small inset maps showing 1.) Toronto on Lake Ontario, Buffalo, Niagara Falls, Lake Erie and Detroit, and 2.) Montreal. The map has fine color and excellent detail.

Sayer & J. Bennett. No. 53 in Fleet Street. 10 May 1770.” London. 1770. B/W. 21½X18. This handsome chart shows the coast from the North Entrance of the Straights of Bell Isle, Pitts Harbour, & St. Peter's Bay to Gilbert's River, Square Island and Cape Bluff, depicting all harbors, bays & inlets along the way. Two inset charts in lower left show 1.) Petty Harbour, & 2.) The Three Harbours of Sophia, Charlotte & Mecklenburg. The overall chart & insets, are dotted with depth-soundings and a large compass rose is drawn in the sea area which is crisscrossed with rhumb lines. Engraved by Thomas Jefferys (1710-1771) one of London's foremost engravers, and published in “The North American Pilot” by Sayer & Bennett. This is a scarce first edition.

Very striking chart shows the coast from Grand Point to Shecatica with all the capes, bays, inlets, points & islands in between. A compass rose with fleur-de-lys pointer & radiating rhumb lines is drawn in the center as an aid to navigators approaching the coast. Hundreds of depth soundings are indicated throughout the chart, which includes 3 small insets of 1.) Plan of Mecantina Harbour, 2.) Plan of St. Augustine & 3.) Plan of Cumberland Harbour. Also indicated are rocks above and below water and best anchorages. The chart was engraved by Thomas Jefferys, one of London's foremost engravers, and published in “The North American Pilot” by Sayer and Bennett. This is a scarce first edition.

Very handsome map shows harbors around Nova Scotia, Cape Breton Island, St. John's (Prince Edward Island), the Magdalen Islands & Newfoundland. Depicts the Gulf of St. Laurence, & the South Entrance where a note says “very safe channel” between the Island of St. Paul & North Cape on Cape Breton island. Includes all the offshore banks, Green Bank, Banquereau, Sable Bank, Whale Bank, Sambro & Bosway Banks & locates Halifax on the coast of Nova Scotia and St. John's Town on the east coast of Newfoundland. The map was engraved & published by John Cary (1755-1835) one of London's foremost 18th century map & globe makers.

Attractive map shows counties in different colors & depicts harbors around the coasts, & the Bay of Fundy, the Gulf of St. Lawrence with the Magdalen Islands & the Island of Anticosti. Depicts a railroad leading to Halifax, Nova Scotia from New Brunswick & locates St. John's on the east coast of Newfoundland with Sable Island offshore in the Atlantic Ocean. This fine map with excellent detail was published in “Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel plate) Family Atlas” in 1862.

Attractive early map shows the Bay of Fundy, Acadia (Nova Scotia), Cape Breton Island, St. John's (Prince Edward Island) & Newfoundland. Depicts harbors around the coasts, with capes, bays, inlets, & points and locates the fishing banks in excellent detail along with the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The map was drawn & engraved by Herman Moll (c.1654-1732) one of the foremost mapmakers & publishers in 18th century London, and this fine map was published in his “Atlas Geographicus or a Compleat System of Geography for America.” Printed by John Nicholson in London in 1717.

Depicts many small offshore islands, depth soundings, courses, buoys, beacons, rocks & other dangers to shipping. includes the coast of Maine & the Grand Manan Channel. Fine chart shows Nova Scotia & the Bay of Fundy named Baye Francoise. Includes Isle St. Jean (Prince Edward Island), & Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), The chart depicts all major harbors around the coasts, & inland depicts rivers, mountain ranges, lakes and Indian Territories. Offshore are the fishing banks & in lower right is a decorative title cartouche ornamented with leaves, flowers & scrolls. The chart was engraved under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1702-1772) the Director of the Depot de la Marine and Royal Hydrographer to the King. It was published in Prevost's “'L'Histoire Generale des Voyages” in Paris in 1757. Very good condition.
