chart of the island of Newfoundland showing harbors around the coast
& locating Havre St. Jean (now the capital city St. John's) on the
southeast coast & Baye de la Trinite (Trinity Bay) & Baye De
Plaisance (Placentia Bay) along with Cap de Raze (Cape Race) at the
southernmost point on the island. A note across the island says that the
interior which is little known, is filled with mountains, woods &
lakes. Chart also shows the northern tip of Isle Royale (Cape Breton
Island) and all of Isle St. Jean (Prince Edward Island);
the Gaspe

railroads crossing the region and shows the St.
Lawrence River flowing into Lake Ontario from the Gulf of St.
Lawrence and the map includes the adjoining regions of New York State,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Michigan locating Detroit and Lake St.
Clair. A decorative border frame makes this a very attractive

explorers routes to Canada's Northwest Territories above Hudson's Bay.
Locates Victoria Strait, King William Land (afterwards Prince of Wales
Land,) Boothia & the Adelaide Peninsula. Shows the tracks of Sir John
Franklin's expedition 1845-47, when he attempted to find a northwest
passage from the Atlantic to the North Pacific, but he died in the
attempt when his ship became trapped in the ice. Lieut Schwatka's
expedition took place at the end of the 19th century after which this
chart was included in August Henry Petermann's “Geographische
Mittheilungen”. Published by Justus Perthes in
1880. |

August Petermann, who drew these charts, was an expert in the
geography of the Arctic and had a bay named for him on the coast of Grinnel
Land. Born in Germany in 1822, he moved to London in 1847 where
he drew maps published by himself and others, and in 1854 he moved back
to Germany and joined the Justus Perthes publishing company where he
issued his famous “Geographische Mittheilungun”
a geographical journal that became world famous. This excellent map was
included in his Journal in the 1887 edition. |

and Cape Walsingham. Around Hudson's Bay is a “New Discovered Sea”, the
Severn River and Fort Severn, York Fort, River Nelson and Cape
Churchill, Repulse Bay and Cary's Swan's Nest. Also locates Davis's
Strait and Groenland (Greenland) with Frobisher's Straits. Map has a
decorative compass rose and was published in the Political Magazine in
London, on November 1782. Engraved by John Lodge, a prominent London

“Chart of Part of the Coast of Nova Scotia From
Documents in the Hydrographical Office of the Admiralty.” London. 1825.
B/W. 24½X37½. Fine chart shows Cape Sable Island and Cape Sable, Bon
Portage Islands, Bear Island, Mutton Islands, Seal Island, Mud Island
and the southeastern coast of Nova Scotia from Pubnico Sound to
Barrington and Barrington Bay. Locates many areas of “Overfalls”. “Overfalls”
are strong breakers caused by winds and currents over irregular bottoms
or by currents meeting. Tide rips & tide races frequently cause “Overfalls”
such as those indicated on this chart. A number of hydrographical
features on the chart are derived from J. F. W. Des Barre's charts of
Nova Scotia published in his “Atlantic Neptune” (1774-1781,) and notes
on depth soundings give credit to Des Barre's surveys. In top right are
detailed Sailing Directions for 1. Seal Island which is covered with
scrubby trees, 2, Pubnico is an excellent ship harbor, 3. Barrington Bay
has ‘extensive flats’ requiring careful navigation, 4. Bonneta Cove has
good anchorages, 5. Shag Harbor is full of shoals, 6. Cape Sable is a
low sandy island and the cliffs to the westward are white etc. This is a
fine early 1st. edition British Admiralty chart with attractive title
calligraphy.

Note: The
following maps were all drawn from manuscript surveys brought back
to Paris by Pierre Francois Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) a Jesuit
Priest who explored Canada and North America’s eastern, southern and
Gulf Coast regions between 1705 and 1720. The manuscript maps were
deposited in the Dept. de la Marine in Paris and were engraved under the
direction of J. N. Bellin, (1703-1722.) the Royal Hydrographer to the King in Paris. They
were ultimately published in Charlevoix’s “L’Histoire et Description
Generale de la Nouvelle France” in 1744. |

Nova Scotia’s eastern coast close to the Canceau Passage between Nova
Scotia (Accadie) and (Isle Royale). Chedabouctou was also named Milfort
Harbor. Harbor contours are clearly defined and show a town (Le Bourg) a
Fort, anchorages, the River de Saumons, Ance a l’Anne, Cap Rouge and
I.Madam. Compass rose with decorative fleur-de-lys is situated in the
Bay area. A fine map.

battlements & gun batteries, built to defend the harbor. Chart also
depicts the entrance to Labrador (the Bras D'Or Lakes) for small vessels
sailing in the area. A large compass rose with radiating rhumb lines is
positioned in sea area at the entrance to the harbor. A fine chart.

in the Bay and Roads for vessels navigating the waterways and entering
from the sea around the Grand Banks. Land contours are clearly
delineated. The shore is shown dotted with low scrub areas and a
decorative compass rose with fleur-de-lys pointer is centered on the
chart. Engraved by Dheulland under the direction of the Royal
Hydrographer, Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772.)

dividing it from Newfoundland's northwestern coast. The map shows
cities, towns, harbors and settlements and includes Sable Island and the
Banks of Banquero, Green, Sable, Whale and the
Great Bank of Newfoundland offshore. Engraved by Thomas Illman and
Edward Pillbrow, the map was included in “A New Universal Atlas”
compiled by Jeremiah Greenleaf (1791-1864) published in 1842. Very good
condition with original color.

actually of northeastern Canada and shows Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario
with counties depicted in different colors. The map includes cities,
towns, harbors and settlements as well as Indian Territories and
Manitoulin Lake off Lake Huron and the Thunder Bay Isles. The map was
finely engraved by Thomas Illman and Edward Pillbrow and included in “A
New Universal Atlas” compiled by Jeremiah Greenleaf (1791-1864)
published in 1842. Very good condition with original color.

charts in lower left show 1.) Petty Harbour, & 2.) The Three Harbours of
Sophia, Charlotte & Mecklenburg. The overall chart & insets, are dotted
with depth-soundings and a large compass rose is drawn in the sea area
which is crisscrossed with rhumb lines. Engraved by Thomas Jefferys
(1710-1771) one of London's foremost engravers, and published in “The
North American Pilot” by Sayer & Bennett. This is a scarce first
edition.

Hundreds of depth soundings are indicated throughout the chart, which
includes 3 small insets of 1.) Plan of Mecantina Harbour, 2.) Plan of
St. Augustine & 3.) Plan of Cumberland Harbour. Also indicated are rocks
above and below water and best anchorages. The chart was engraved by
Thomas Jefferys, one of London's foremost engravers, and published in
“The North American Pilot” by Sayer and Bennett. This is a scarce first

early map shows the Bay of Fundy, Acadia (Nova Scotia), Cape Breton
Island, St. John's (Prince Edward Island) &
Newfoundland. Depicts harbors around the coasts, with capes, bays,
inlets, & points and locates the fishing banks in excellent detail along
with the Gulf of St. Lawrence. The map was drawn & engraved by Herman
Moll (c.1654-1732) one of the foremost mapmakers & publishers in 18th
century London, and this fine map was published in his “Atlas
Geographicus or a Compleat System of Geography for America.” Printed by
John Nicholson in London in 1717. |

Paris. 1757. Colored. 8½X13. Fine chart shows Nova Scotia & the Bay of
Fundy named Baye Francoise. Includes Isle St.
Jean (Prince Edward Island), & Isle Royale (Cape Breton Island), The
chart depicts all major harbors around the coasts, & inland depicts
rivers, mountain ranges, lakes and Indian Territories. Offshore are the
fishing banks & in lower right is a decorative title cartouche
ornamented with leaves, flowers & scrolls. The chart was engraved under
the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1702-1772) the Director of the
Depot de la Marine and Royal Hydrographer to the King.
It was published in Prevost's “'L'Histoire
Generale des Voyages” in Paris in 1757. Very good condition. |
