CARIB110 - H. MOLL “The Island of St. Christopher's with Antego and Part of the Islands of America Etc.” London. 1717. Colored. 7X10. Fine early map by Herman Moll (c.1654-1732) one of the great geographers, engravers and cartographers at the time of the Age of Enlightenment in Britain. It was a time when navigators were accomplishing round the world voyages and bringing back to London and the major centers in Europe, updated charts and surveys from different parts of the world, enabling cartographers to draw, engrave and publish new maps and charts for a general public eager to learn more about the Old and the New World, depicted on the maps with topographical and hydrographical details of distant lands not seen before. Herman Moll, who drew this map, was an intellectual with a thirst for geographic and scientific knowledge which he acquired while frequenting London's Coffee Houses, where he met and socialized with the scientist, Robert Hooke (1635-1703), the authors Daniel Defoe and Jonathan Swift, and the antiquarian the Rev. Dr. William Stukeley (1687-1765). Amongst his Coffee House friends were the buccaneers and world travelers William Dampier (1651-1715) and Woodes Rogers (c.1679-1732,) for whom he drew maps and charts based on their sailing adventures and explorations. Moll's chart of St. Christopher's, Antego and the West Indies all depicted on one sheet, would have been of considerable interest to the English plantation owners involved in the burgeoning West Indies trade, and was based on information Moll would have acquired from his mariner friends. This fine 3-part map was issued in “Atlas Geographicus or a Compleat System of Geography for America,” published by John Nicholson in 1717. (Ref. The Cartographer and the Literati - Herman Moll and His Intellectual Circle” - by Dennis Reinhartz. 1997.)

This fine 4 part chart was published in Thomson's New General Atlas in 1816 & engraved by Samuel John Neele. It shows the 4 islands in large scale with detailed shoreland topography, depicting harbors & bays around coastlines & noting parishes, roads, towns & settlements inland. Chart has some very light offsetting caused when the oils in the original printing inks were not dried sufficiently when the sheets were bound into the atlas, and an image was transferred from a printed surface to the back of another sheet pressed against it. Finding this chart with the 4 islands together is uncommon as they are frequently cut from the page and marketed separately. The offsetting does not impact the desirability of the chart, which includes the scarce depiction of Curacao.

The West India Atlas or a Compendious Description of the West Indies Consisting
of a Complete Collection of Accurate Charts, with Plans of the Harbours, Roads, Bays,
and Maps of the Separate Islands taken from Actual Surveys. Together with an Historical
Account of the Several Countries and Islands which Compose that Part of the World.
Engraved by Thomas Jefferys and Published by Robert Sayer. 1775 (1788).

The following charts of harbors on the coast of Cuba were engraved by Thomas Jefferys (1710-1771) a prominent engraver in 18th century London. He began his career as a copper engraver, while developing an interest in geography and map selling. He was appointed Geographer to the Prince of Wales in 1746 and later Geographer to King George III. His early interests lay in English County maps and maps of North America and the West Indies, which he compiled mostly from current sources. But although he was an outstanding engraver and cartographer he was constantly in debt and when facing bankruptcy in 1766, it was his friend Robert Sayer, a wealthy publisher in London who bailed him out and took over the publishing of his major works, such as The West India Atlas whch came out in 1775, 4 years after his death, with later editions to 1788. The charts have both hydrographical and topographical details and have been attractively designed.
