- J. JANSSON “Virginiae Partis Australis et Floridae Partis Orientalis
Interjacentiumque Regionum Nova Descriptio.”
Amsterdam 1642. Colored. 15X20. This very attractive & colorful map
published by Jan Jansson (1588-1664) was based on a map by W & J Blaeu &
shows America's southeast coast from Florida to Chesapeake Bay including
Georgia, the Carolinas & Southern Virginia. In the late 16th century the
Spanish had claimed the territory, but by the early 17th century the
French & English had started colonies along the coast, & when the Blaeu
map was drawn it was divided into English & French zones, depicted by
the colorful coats-of-arms drawn on the map. Inland the map depicts
rivers & lakes and the first showing of the Appalachian Mountains called
Apalatcy Montes Auriseri, & it is said on the map that these mountains
were named after the Indian King Apalatcy who lived there around 1562.
This beautiful map is decorated with sailing ships, compass roses,
cherubs & a handsome title cartouche ornamented with scrolls, strapwork
& native figures. Published in “Nuevo Atlas O Teatro De Todo El Mundo”
by Jan Jansson in 1642. French text on verso.
