EDWARD HASTED (1732-1812)

Born in 1732 Edward Hasted devoted 40 years of his life to writing and compiling a history of the County of Kent in England. When first published between 1778-1799, the history came out in a folio edition in 4 volumes and was titled "The History and Topographical Survey of the County of Kent." A smaller edition ( octovo size) came out in 1797-1801.The following 14 maps came from the 1st edition & although some of the maps have been repaired & restored and are not in prime condition, they are intensely detailed showing cities, towns, villages, harbors, castles, manors, parks, roads & rivers, and major landmarks, amd are a wonderful source for genealogical research. The maps are divided into "Hundreds" which was an ancient name given to portions of the County for administration and military purposes and was supposed to imply the territory occupied by one hundred families or 100 soldiers etc.

ECM177 - B. COLE “A Plan of the Intended New Road from Padington to Islington.” London. 1755. Colored. 6X18. This early map of a section of London that would have been familiar to Dr. Samuel Johnson, James Boswell and Benjamin Franklin, when he was in town, encompasses an area from the Tyburn Road to Oxford Street including Grosvenor, Berkeley, Hanover and Cavendish Squares. Marylebone, the Middlesex Hospital, Great Russell Street & Red Lion Square, Holborn & Lincoln's Inn, before ending at Islington. This was an area in central London that was occupied by grand mansions, inns, coffeehouses, markets, fashionable shops & hospitals, and where a new road was planned to by-pass the area and ease the congestion of London's narrow streets. The population of London in the 1750's was estimated at around 650,000, over 10% of the population of England. (See “Dr.Johnson's London” by Picard) so new roads were being built at a rapid pace in and around the nation's capital. This attractive map was drawn by Benjamin Cole, an engraver and map seller in London and published in “The Gentleman's Magazine” in 1755.  (See “Maps in British Perioidicals” by David Jolly. 1990.) Title in top right is surrounded by a decorative rococo cartouche with leaf, flower and shell motifs. A colorful compass rose for direction is depicted in center.
