Early 18th. Century Hand colored
Views, Botanicals, Prints & Engravings

by Grace Galleries of Harpswell, Maine

In 18th century Europe, the art of botanical drawing and topographical views of country houses and formal gardens, reached a pinnacle of artistic design and execution. Bound into volumes and engraved by master engravers, these drawings were immensely popular, and today as we look at the relatively small number of copper plate engravings from these volumes, it's like opening a window onto a bygone era that valued nature's beauties and colors in the form of fruit, flowers, and trees, many in landscape settings with water views and depictions of stately homes and manicured gardens.

The following hand colored engravings all date to the early 1700's and any one of them would look handsome framed. Remember to double click on images to see a larger photo.

“Sir” John Hill (c-1716-75) “The Vegetable System” 1759

John Hill started life as an apothecary, but finding the work underpaid and unrewarding, he tried garden planning, botanizing, acting and play-writing, none of which satisfied his desire for fame and fortune. So in 1759 he began his ‘magnum opus’ - The Vegetable System, which was issued in the next 16 years in 26 folio volumes, containing 1600 engravings of 26,000 different plants. The enterprise was a financial failure due to the time involved in drawing and engraving each of the copper plates. Nevertheless, his fame as a botanical artist has grown greater over the years until now, his engravings are valued for the beauty of their design and the detail of the plants depicted. Many of them brought back by explorers returning from trips abroad to Asia, India and the Americas in the early 18th century. The following 4 plates are superb examples of Hill's art from The Vegetable System and on each plate the plants are named in a finely engraved script.

“Nurnbergische Hesperides”
Published by Johann Christoph Volckamer
Nurnberg, Germany. 1708-1714.

Johann Volckamer was a wealthy Nurnberg merchant who owned magnificent orchards and a fine orangery. At his expense he employed a number of draughtsmen and engravers to execute depictions of his fruit which he published under the title of “Nurnbergische Hesperides” with over 100 plates all folio size. Unlike other 18th century botanical engravings which are set against plain backgrounds, Volckamer filled in the lower section of his plates with views of palaces, gardens, landscapes & seascapes in Germany, Austria and Italy. These delightful additions make the Volckamer engravings especially attractive.

George Edwards (1694-1773)

George Edwards was an Englishman who occupied the position of Librarian at the Royal College of Physicians in 1733, while pursuing his natural interest in Ornithology. Between 1742-1751, Edwards produced “A Natural History of Birds” also called “The Natural History of Uncommon Birds”, in 4 volumes. It was an instant success due in large part to his precise, detailed and accurate drawings. He was known to paint his birds several times over before engraving them on copper. The bird prints shown below are all from “A Natural History of Birds” and they are all perfect examples of George Edwards meticulous attention to detail in his drawings and are beautifully handcolored in watercolor. Each engraving includes a page of text on the birds portrayed, taken from the book.

G. EDWARDS “Verschiedene Resen Des Auctoris.” Nurnberg 1746. Colored. 10X8. This fascinating map was drawn by George Edwards (1694-1773), artist, naturalist & ornithologist, most famous for his beautiful bird engravings shown here on our webpage. The map was published in Edwards “Natural History of Birds” in London in 1746 and subsequently in French and German editions, published by J. M. Seligmann in Nurnberg. This particular map was published in the scarce German edition and shows Edwards' journeys between 1716-1730 throughout Holland in 1716, Norway in 1718, France from 1719-21 and Holland again in 1730, in order to study his beloved birds and other natural creatures to be found in those regions. In contrast, on this map of Great Britain and northwestern Europe, Edwards superimposed drawings of the large beak of an Egyptian Ibis, two Stag Beetles from Borneo and in the lower right corner, the Least Humming Bird from Jamaica with its egg, all drawn lifesize. (click on thumbnail image) Edwards interest in natural history was boundless and this wonderful map, with its curious combination of cartography and the natural world is a rare and very attractive curiosity.
