Locates Green Point & Cabell Point & includes a note that says
“vessels bound into Ocilla River should take a
Pilot at St. Mark's for the river cannot be readily found by a
stranger.....there is an anchorage 6 or 7 miles off the entrance in 3
fathoms of water, but it is not safe in heavy weather. Both sides of the
entrance are low and marshy, the oppening cannot be distinguished from
the anchorage”. Indications of rocks and
oysters are noted in several areas. |

Venice. 1778. Colored. 12X16½. Beautiful late 18th
century map by a well-known Italian cartographer and publisher, Antonio
Zatta (fl.1750-1804) shows Lake Superior with 5 islands in the center.
With the exception of Isle Royale the other islands were fictitious and
were the creation of Pierre Francois Charlevoix )1682-1761) a French
Jesuit priest who explored Canada and America's northeastern regions
between 1705-1720. Charlevoix created the islands to honor his Patron
Jean Frederic Phelippeaux, Comte de Maurepas whose family estate was
named Ponchartrain and whose Patron Saint was St. Anne. The fictitious
islands of Phillipeaux, St. Anne, Maurepas and Ponchartrain appeared on
many maps until later explorers were able to discount their existence in
the early 19th century. The map of Florida was the creation of Antonio
Zatta, and only he knew why he had placed it in the largely unexplored
territory above Lake Superior! The map is Plate 1 from “Le Colonie Unite
Dell' America Settentrle” a 12 sheet atlas based on John Mitchell's
important map of the British and French dominions in North America.”

Tortugas. Published in 1857 by Samuel N. Gaston in ”The Diamond Atlas”
it was drawn & edited by Charles G. Colby (1830-1866). A charming little
map that would look attractive framed.

of Pensacola, Florida was published in “Gazzettiere Americano” in
Livorno, Italy in the late 18th century. The map shows Pensacola and
It's harbor, & Santa Rosa Island at it's entrance. Also depicts a large
lake at the entrance to the harbor & small buildings along Pensacola's
shore. A compass rose with fleur-de-lys motif & radiating rhumb lines
completes this attractive picture. Engraved by Giuseppe Pazzi, it was
published by Marco Coltellini. (Ref. Philip's Atlases. No. 1161. Page
586. Vol.3 #5.)

coasts. Depicts Lake Okee Cho Bee & Big Cypress, the Everglades,

railroads, forts, canals, land divisions, lakes and primary towns and
villages. The Florida Keys are depicted in a separate inset in lower
left. This excellent map portrays Florida at a time when it was
beginning to be settled as roads and railroads opened the State to
visitors from the north, and west, who came to build and develop the
land and the sea-coast. The map was published in Johnson's “New
Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas” in 1863.

Paris. 1744. Colored. 7½X11 Fine early chart of
Pensacola Harbor shows a large inlet at the harbor entrance, & the Isle
De Rose. Depicts the settlement at Pensacola & includes points, bays,
depth soundings, the Canal of Ste. Rose & the rivers L'Amirante &
Jourdan. A point of land sticking out into the harbor is called La Terre
Ferme. At the bottom of the chart is a colorful compass rose with
fleur-de-lys motif & radiating rhumb lines, placed there as an aid to
mariners approaching the harbor from the Gulf of Mexico. The chart was
drawn from manuscript sketches brought back to Paris by Pierre Francois
Xavier de Charlevoix (1682-1761) a Jesuit Priest who traveled through
Canada & North America's eastern & southern regions from 1705-1720. It
was engraved in Paris under the direction of Jacques Nicolas Bellin
(1703-1772) the Royal Hydrographer to the King & included in
Charlevoix's “L'Histoire et Description Generale de la Nouvelle France”
in 1744. The engraver was Guillaume Dheulland (1700-1770) a master
engraver in 18th century Paris.

map of the harbor of St. Augustine with the City shown in a simple block
plan with fortifications. The map depicts Fort Negro, & Fort Piccolo & a
Battery defending the mouth of the harbor. Locates roads leading to St.
Augustine & some native settlements & rivers flowing into the harbor.
The map was drawn with west at the top & includes a compass rose with
fleur-de-lys motif pointing to the north on the lower right side of the
map. It was published in the “Gazzatiere Americano” under the direction
of Gio. Tommaso Masi. Engraved by Giusepe Pazzi & drawn by Viol.Vanni.

Proper Spot for A Settlement on the Mississippi River.”
London. 1772. Colored. 7½X13¼. This attractive map was published in the
Gentleman's Magazine in London in 1772 to show a plan for developing a
new settlement on the Mississippi River called New Orleans. The map
depicts the Gulf Coast from Pensacola & Mobile Bay across to the
Mississippi River & Delta & the Chandeleur Islands. In lower right is a
street block plan layout of the proposed new settlement with a compass
rose for direction. Thie map was engraved by John Lodge (fl.1755-1796)
one of London's foremost geographers & engravers. A scarce map in very
nice condition.

Florida. Drawn From the Best Authorities.”
London. 1765. Colored. 7¼X8½. This attractive mid
18th century map takes in all of the Florida Peninsula over to the
Tortugas Islands plus West Florida & Apalalche Bay to Cape Escondido &
Pensacola to Mobile Bay where the Gulf Coast continues to the
Mississippi Delta, New Orleans & Lake Ponchatrain. Alabama & Mississippi
have not yet been recognized, so the entire Gulf Coast is still named
West Florida. The map was published in Smollett's “Continuation of the
Complete History of England.” A title cartouche ornamented with flowers,
scrolls & leaves is placed in lower center & the map depicts all harbors
on the east coast from southern Georgia and St. Augustine down to the
Florida Keys. Tobias George Smollett (1721-1771) was a Scottish
novelist, surgeon, historian, & geographer. The map was also published
in March 1765 in “The London Magazine.”

Fine copper engraving shows French Huguenot settlers on the banks of the
St. Johns River in Florida, with the Fort they had built in 1562-1564 & which
they called Fort Caroline. Boats appear in the River where men are fishing &
standing around talking. The first settlers had arrived in 1562 with Captain
Jean Ribaut (1520-1565) & a second expedition arrived in 1564 from France
with Capt. Rene de Laudoniere, bringing with them an artist named Jacques Le
Moyne de Morgues. Le Moyne is credited with the original of this sketch of
the Fort & the settlers, which was later engraved & published by Theodore de
Bry (1528-1598) in his "Grand Voyages" issued from 1590=1601. In 1671
Arnoldus Montanus (1625-1683) published the sketch of the Fort in his "Die
Nieuwe en Onbekende Weerld, " considered the 1st Encyclopedia of the
Americas. (Ref. Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers, & A Foothold in Florida.

MONTANUS "Pagus Hispanorum in Florida." Amsterdam.
1671. B/W. 11X14. Fine
early copper engraving is one of the first depictions of the Port of St.
Augustine, which was founded in 1565 by Pedro Menendez d'Avila, a Spaniard
who slaughtered many of the French Huguenot settlers in the region in order
to establish a Spanish Port , on the Florida coast, north of Spain's
holdings in the Caribbean. The scene shows details of a Fort with ships
anchored along the shore, & depicts many buildings & native Indians at work
& a well dressed couple walking toward the shore with a native holding an
elaborate sunshade over their heads. The sketch was attributed to Gerrit Van

- T. SILVER “A View of the Town and Castle of St.
Augustine and the English Camp Before it. June 20, 1740 by Thomas
Silver.”
London July 1740, Colored. 11½X6½. This beautifully
engraved Msp/View & text was drawn on the spot by an English Naval
Officer in the Sloop Hector in May 1740, after which it was sent back to
London to be published in The Gentleman's Magazine, a monthly magazine
of current affairs. The map depicts the famous Siege of St. Augustine by
General Oglethorpe who approached the area both from the land & the sea.
The map & view was also published later in 1742 in “Oglethorpe. An
Impartial Account of the late Expedition Against St. Augustine under
General Oglethorpe.” by J. Huggonson. The View shows finely engraved
drawings of the ships, with buildings along the shore & the Castle, with
channels & breakers at the harbor entrance. Below the View are detailed
notes & a key outlining the events of the encounter & the subsequent
raising of the Siege. A scarce item in very good condition.
