ROBINSON "Chart of Necker Island in 23°34' of Latitude N. & 166°52' of Longitude W. of Paris and of the Basse Des Frégates Francaises or French Frigates Shoal in 23°45' of Latitude N. & 168°10' of Longitude. Discovered in November 1786." London. 1798. Colored. 15X19¼. This fine chart is from the English Edition of the "Voyages of La Perouse" published in London, one year after the French Edition came out. For a description of the chart see HAW102 above. Only minor differences are apparent between the French & English Editions, while the English plates were smaller than the French they contain the same basic information and titles.

A small, but very fine engraved scene of the death of Capt. James Cook at Kealakakua Bay in Hawaii in 1779. The engraving shows the battle between the natives and Cook's men which ended in Cook being mortally wounded.

Engraved after a drawing by John Webber during Cook's 3rd. voyage to the Pacific shows a ring of natives sitting in front of a thatched roof hut, with Capt. Cook with his officers in the center, being plied with offerings of meats roasted on a fire in the background. Palm trees, a fence and leafy foliage form a backdrop for this fine landscape scene.

HAW121 - W. ROBERTSON "The Artificial Sphere" London 1784. Colored. 7½X6. Published in "Voyage to the Pacific" by J. Stockdale. Very decorative engraving of an Armillary Sphere in center on a stone plinth in a landscape setting. Bordered on one side by a tombstone topped with an urn and showing the words 'Sacred to the Memory of Capt. Cook' cut into the stone. On the otherside is a gentleman reclining & holding a map of Hawaii in his left hand. This attractive engraving is bordered along the top and down the sides with garlands of leaves, flowers & bows.

HAW127 - U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY "General Map of the Island of Maui. Reproduced from Hawaiian Government Survey. As surveyed to March 1st 1880." Wash. D.C. 1883-93. B/W. 9X11. Excellent chart shows coastal outlines with topographical details. Includes a mileage scale indicating distances from Kahului and Makena to villages, courthouses, seminary, edge of craters and end of a mountain road. Maps of Maui by itself are scarce. This chart is lightly browned at folds but condition otherwise is good, and the chart is well drawn and finely detailed.

HAW134 - R. BENARD "Cimetiere D'Atooi." Paris.1785. Colored. 9X14½. Finely engraved scene shows a burial ground on the island of Kaui, one of the Sandwich Islands drawn during Capt. James Cook's 3rd voyage to the Pacific (1776-1779.) The drawing was engraved by Robert Benard for inclusion in "Troisieme Voyage de Cook Chez M. De Meumier." Published in 1785.

James Cook's third voyage to the Pacific & Hawaii in 1776-1780. The sketch was drawn by John Webber who sailed with Cook, as official artist, on the voyage. The original English edition of the Voyage shows this engraving in larger scale titledA Savage of the Sandwich Islands Dancing. Attractive.

Very striking engraving of a Hawaiian warrior from a sketch by John Webber who sailed with Captain Cook, as official artist on his third voyage to the Pacific and Hawaii in 1776-1780. This drawing is from the Dutch edition of Cook's voyages & is finely engraved.

Paris. 1797. B/W. 27X19. Striking chart in two sections depicts Owhyhee, Mowée, Ranai, Morotoi & Woahoo in top section with tracks of the ships, in large scale, and the same islands with the addition of Atooi & Oneeheow in smaller scale on bottom chart. Jean Francois Galaup, Comte de La Perouse (1741-1788) was a French navigator & explorer who set out on a round the world voyage in 1785 with two ships, the Boussole and the Astrolabe & in May 1786 he visited the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) where his officers surveyed and charted the islands using the observations noted by Capt. James Cook, made during his earlier visit to the islands in 1778. La Perouse's voyage ended in disaster in 1788 when the ships disappeared with all hands, and it wasn't until 37 years later that the fate of the expedition was finally solved in 1825. This is a fine chart in very good condition.

HAW163 - G. VANCOUVER “Cratere du Mont-Worrroray, a Owhyhee.” Paris. 1800. B/W. 4X5. 1800. Small finely engraved view of the crater of Mount Worrorray in Hawaii, was sketched by an artist who accompanied Capt. George Vancouver on his round the world voyage between 1791-1795. Commanding two ships, the “Discovery” and the “Chatham” Vancouver left England in April 1791, & sailed via the Cape of Good Hope, to southwest Australia and New Zealand, before heading to Tahiti where he arrived on December 30, making landfall in Hawaii in February of 1792. This small engraving was included in the French Octavo edition of Vancouver's Voyages, and published in Paris in 1800.

HAW174 - J. F. BROWN & M. D. MONSARRAT “Lanai. Government Survey.” Wash. D.C. 1878. Colored. 20X26. Large survey of the Island shows it divided into Kaa, Paomai, Mahana, Maunalet, Kalulu, Kkaunolu, Lawai, Aawili, Kaohai, Kamao, Palawai, Kealia, Appun, Kaunolu, Kalulu, & Kamoku. Survey shows acreage for each division, the school house, elevations & harbors around the coast with rivers flowing across the island and primary roads leading to towns & settlements. A fine survey.

Two finely engraved views on one sheet taken from an original sketch by John Webber, a young artist who accompanied Capt. James Cook on his voyage to the Pacific in 1776-1780. The sketches show a Burial Ground with fanciful skulls on poles around it and a view of the Priests' houses in Hawaii with a mountain landscape in the background. From Thomas Banke's “New System of Geography. Published by Royal Authority.” 1787.

HAW179 - R. BONNE “Carte Des Isles Sandwich. Par. M. Bonne. Ingenieur-Hydrographe de La Marine.” Paris. 1787. Colored. 9¼X13½. Splendid map of the Sandwich (Hawaiian) Islands visited by Capt. James Cook on his 3rd voyage to the Pacific in 1777-1779, and where he met his death on February 14th 1779, killed by the natives during a dispute over the theft of a cutter from his ship, the Resolution, lying at anchor offshore. The map has an inset chart of Karakakooa Bay showing Kowrowa Point where Cook died and where the natives felled him with clubs and spears. The map was taken from an original sketch by William Bligh, who had accompanied Cook as navigator, on the voyage, and after Cook's crew brought the Resolution back to England in 1780, the sketch was redrawn by Henry Roberts and included in the official history of Cook's Voyages. This map is the French edition of the Bligh survey, and it shows the tracks of Cook's ship in 1778 and 1779 and outlines of the major Hawaiian Islands. A handsome compass rose with fleur-de-lys pointer is depicted in the sea area in the top right region of the chart. The map was drawn for Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) by his son (Bonne fils.) and engraved by Gaspard Andre for Nicolas Desmarest in 1787.

DE LA PEROUSE “Chart of the Sandwich Islands Laid Down From the Observations Made On Board the “Boussole” & the “Astrolabe” In the Parts Visited by Those Ships & From Observations of Capt. Cook in the Other Parts.” London 1798. Colored. 9X15. In June of 1785 Comte Jean Francois Galaup De La Perouse, set sail from Brest in France with two ships the “Boussole” & the “Astrolabe” on a round-the-world voyage. In May of 1786 the ships reached the Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) & took surveys, using the observations of Capt. James Cook who had visited the islands in 1778. This chart shows Owhyee, Tahoorowa, Mowee, Ranai, Morotoi, Woahoo, Atooi, Oneeheow and Tahoora, with ship's tracks threading between the islands. La Perouses's voyage ended in disaster in 1788 when the ships disappeared with all hands off the east coast of Australia. This chart was published by G. & J. Robinson in London in 1798. In 1797, the French Edition of the Voyage of La Perouse came out in Paris, to be quickly copied one year later in London by the Robinsons in 1798. An attractive chart of the islands.

HAW182 - W. D. ALEXANDER “Part of the City of Honolulu. Oahu. H.I.” Hawaii 1893. Colored. 26X34. This large stunning map of the City of Honolulu shows street block plans & the harbor, public buildings, Arion Hall, U.S. Consulate, U.S. Legation, Residency of J. B. Atherton where troops first went. Includes an Affidavit by W. D. Alexander, Surveyor General of the Hawaiian Islands, that says in part “that the map upon which this affidavit is endorsed is a correct map of the central portions of the City of Honolulu & is made by F. S. Dodge, an assistant in my department having charge of City Surveying. That from the records & maps in the Survey Department & from my personal knowledge portions of the map colored in red were to the best of my knowledge & belief owned or leased by Americans. (Signed by W. D. Alexander. January 1893.) The map includes names of streets & property owners, Brewer's Wharf & a boat landing. Condition of the map is good. It was folded but is now pressed flat & has some light age-toning along the edges of 3 of the old fold lines. Not affecting the image. A scarce map of Honolulu City as it appeared in 1893.

HAW183 - DEPT OF THE INTERIOR. GENERAL LAND OFFICE “Map of the Territory of Hawaii.” Wash. D.C. 1909. Colored. 22X33. Excellent map of the Hawaiian Islands showing harbors & all topographical & hydrographical details. Depicts channels between the islands & includes a large inset map in lower left of the Hawaiian Archipelago & the area of the Bird Reservation. Also includes a table of distances from Honolulu to the Principal Ports of the Pacific. The map was compiled from data on file in the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey Hydrographic Office: Hawaiian Government Surveys & other authentic sources & under the Direction of I. P. Berthrong, Chief of Drafting Division G.I.O Washington D.C. 1909. The map is in very nice condition. It has folds but is in fine, clean condition with good printed color.

HAW184 - RUTH TAYLOR WHITE “Island of Maui” Honolulu, Hawaii. c. 1935. Colored. 11¼X14½. Ruth Taylor White was a well-known illustrator in the '30's who traveled widely , drawing maps in a whimsical, humorous style of the places & countries she visited. This map of Maui is decorated with small cheerful figures, palm trees, pineapples, caves & parks, boats & swimmers. A note on the map states “This Cartograph is lined & colored to memories of the good times I found on the Island of Maui. That it is the “Valley Island” you will have no doubt when you look down from Haleakala's 10,000 foot top across the sweep of the checkered plain that's anchored to a pile of the sheerest, greenest peaks on earth.” Printed by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Courtesy of the Hawaii Tourist Board. Excellent condition.

HAW185 - RUTH TAYLOR WHITE “Island of Kaui.” Honolulu. Hawaii. c. 1935. Colored. 11¼X14½. Ruth Taylor White was a well-known illustrator in the '30's who traveled widely drawing maps in a whimsical, humorous style of the places & countries she visited. This map of Kaui shows small happy figures running, walking, playing, sunbathing, swimming & boating. A note on the map by Ruth Taylor, says “This Cartograph is lined & colored to the fun I found on the “Garden Isle. Kaui” some 100 miles from Honolulu....an hour by plane, a night by boat. I found this (as did discoverer Capt. Cook) a treasure island. And you'll agree if you will drive the 40 miles or so that circle north & south to the majestic barrier of Na Pali cliffs that divide the Barking Sands from Haena Caves”. HAW186 - RUTH TAYLOR WHITE “Island of Oahu.” Honolulu, Hawaii. c. 1935. Colored. 11X14½. Very colorful map by Ruth Taylor White, a well-known illustrator in the '30's. She traveled widely drawing maps in a whimsical, humorous style of the countries & places she visited. This map of Oahu depicts Honolulu & the Naval Station & lots of happy people playing, swimming, sunbathing, boating, running, jumping & having a great time, while the center of the island is dotted with pineapple plants, palm trees & vegetation. A note on the map by Ruth Taylor White states “This Cartograph is lined and colored to the thrills that greeted me when I first touched the Hawaiian islands some 2000 miles from America's western edge....at the Crossroads of the Pacific. In the sun-filled corner of this island of Oahu you'll find, as I did, a lifetime of high adventure.” Printed by the Honolulu Star-Gazette, Courtesy of the Hawaii Tourist Bureau. HAW187 - RUTH TAYLOR WHITE “Island of Hawaii.” Honolulu, Hawaii. c.1935. Colored. 14½X11. This colorful map of the Island of Hawaii was drawn by Ruth Taylor White, a well-known illustrator in the '30.s who traveled widely & drew maps in a whimsical, humorous style of the countries & places she visited. In the center of this charming map is the volcano of Mauna Kea, & a golf course, hotels, coffee plantations, the Hawaii National Park & lots of happy people playing, horseback riding, swimming, boating, fishing & flying in an aeroplane above the coast. A note on the map by Ruth Taylor White states “A Cartograph that 's drawn to my days & nights of adventure in the Island of Hawaii. It is called by some the “Big Island”, by others the “Scenic Isle”. I found in the near 300 miles that I motored around the shore that both were right. And if I were asked I'd add a name...the “Big Thrill”” Printed by the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, Courtesy of the Hawaii Tourist Bureau. Very nice condition.

HAW188 - WALTER E. WALL “Kauai. Hawaiian Islands.” Wash.  D.C. 1903. Colored. 23½X30. Large Hawaiian Territory Survey shows the Island divided into parishes, with rivers, roads, mountains, swamp lands, homestead settlement tracts, grazing lands, sugar plantations & forest reserves, schools & post offices. Depicts harbors & bays around the shorelines with lighthouses, & a wireless telegraph pole. The chart was compiled by John M. Donn from official & private surveys, under the direction of Walter E. Wall, Chief Surveyor. Excellent survey lithographed in Washington, D.C. Condition overall good, with some light fold marks & slight age-toning down one or two folds.

HAW189 - W. D. ALEXANDER “Hawaii. Hawaiian Islands.” Wash. D.C. 1904. Colored. 36X31½. Splendid large Hawaii Territory Survey divided into parishes with detailed topography depicting public lands, homestead settlement tracts, areas of grazing lands, sugar plantations, forest reserves & wet lands (rice & taro). Locates the crater of Mokuaweoweo on Mauna Loa where a note indicates “no vegetation” & “waste land.” Harbors & bays are shown around the coast where the chart indicates townships & well defined cultivated lands. This fine survey was compiled by John M. Donn under the direction of Walter E. Wall, Chief Surveyor & lithographed in Washington, D.C. in 1904. Condition is good overall with light creasing at folds & slight age toning down one or two folds.

HAW190 - W. D. ALEXANDER “Molokai” Wash. D.C. 1897. Colored. 25X48. Striking Hawaiian Government Survey shows the island of Molokai in its entirety divided into Parishes & topographical features, depicting mountains, forest & scrub lands, rivers, roads, settlements & cultivated areas & all primary harbors around the coast. Includes Ka Lae o Kalaau Molokai Light on the southwest corner of the island. Triangulations by W. D. Alexander, Surveyor General & Boundaries by M. D. Monsarrat. Map drawn by F. S. Dodge. Condition, Folded but good with only very light age-toning down a few folds.
