GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE “A Plan of the River Lagon and of the Intended
Navigable Canal from Belfast to Loughneath. Surveyed by Order of the
Honble and Humble. The Navigation Board of Ireland in 1768. By Robert
Whitworth Engnr.” London. 1778. B/W.
6½X12¼. This finely engraved chart depicts the line of a projected canal
to connect Belfast, in Northern Ireland to Loughneath via Hillsborough
and Lisburn, but as the text in the Gentleman's Magazine of 1778 states
“this is a memorable instance of the folly & madness of attempting to
make a rapid river navigable.” In 1754 work was begun to construct a
canal with locks to bypass the Mills, but after 9 years, when work was
finally completed it was considered “very imperfect.” One barge did make
the trip but not without great difficulty due to the shoals and rapid
currents in the river. Nevertheless, “after spending 50,000 pounds of
the public money, the river was not navigable for a smaller boat nor of
the least use to the country.” The chart includes a mileage scale in
lower right and many towns & Mills with roads on each side of the river.
Engraved by Thomas Bowen (1732-1790) one of London's foremost engravers,
the chart was published in the Supplement to the Gentleman's Magazine in
December 1778. (A copy of the Magazine is included with the chart.)
