The following drawings of Light Vessels Nos. 51, 52, 53 & 54 represent 4 sister ships built in 1892 in West Bay City, Michigan. Image size of the drawings is 14½X19.

LH101 - U.S. Light Vessel No.51. Length 118.10. Beam 26’.9. Draft 12’. Tonnage. 375 displ. Steel hull & fastenings. 2 masts with lantern galleries. 2 lights each with a cluster of 4 gimballed electric light lanterns. Back up oil lanterns also fitted. This is the first Light Vessel to have a steel hull & electric lights. Includes hand operated steam whistle. Stationed. 1892-1894 Cornfield Pt. CT. 1894-1908 Sandy Hook, New York. Drawing depicts rigging plan showing arrangement of electric lights etc. Retd. 1919. Age 27.

Double click to enlarge photoLH102 - U.S. Light Vessels No. 52, 53 & 54 are sister ships with No. 51. Each one has slight differences, though all were built at the  same time in the same yard.

No 52. Had an iron hull & fastenings. One of the first 4 light vessels to have the hawsepipe through the stern and aligned with the center line of the vessel. Stationed at Fenwick Island Shoal (DE)  Retd. 1931 Age 39.

No.53. Steam screw  single compound condensing engine. 2 Scotch boilers. Max. speed 6 knots. Coal capacity  52 tons. Also rigged for sail. 2 lanterns  each with  8 oil lamps. 12 steam whistle Stationed. Stone Horse Shoal (MA) Retd. 1951. Age 59.

No.54. Iron hull & fastenings. 2 lanterns each with oil lamps & reflectors. Fog signal., 12”: steam chime whistle. Hand operated bell. Stationed. 1892-1894. Nantucket . New South Shoal. 1894-1940. Boston. Retd. 1946. Age 54.

The following maps of Light House Districts are from “The Annual Report of the Light House Board.” 1880-1882.

Each map includes a reference table indicating the different varieties of lights, and the arc of illumination. The maps depict the lighthouses and light beacons along the coasts and rivers in each Light House District. Map sizes 8X10 inches with light printed color.

Lighthouse District Depicts the U.S. East Coast from the St. Croix Lighthouse in New Brunswick, Canada down to Maine & Petit Manan Light to Owls Head Lt, Sequin Lt. Half Way Rock, Cape Elizabeth Lt. and Portland Head Lt. & down to the Knubble & Portsmouth, New Hampshire and Newburyport, Mass. Includes dozens of Lighthouses along the coast and into the rivers. Finely detailed.

Continues to Plymouth Lt, & Cape Cod Bay and the Cape. Shows Nantucket Sound with Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard.Locates East Chop Lt, Chatham & Monomoy Lt. Vineyard Sound & Buzzards Bay. Gay Head Lt. & the Nantucket New South Shoal Light Ship. Includes dozens of Lighthouses & beacons throughout the region which was always hazardous to shipping approaching the coast.

Lighthouse District depicts the coast from Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island including Dutch Island & Newport Lights, Beaver Tail Light & the Brenton’s Reef Light Ship. Shows Point Judith & Watch Hill Lights & the Connecticut Coast with Long Island Sound. Includes all of Long Island with many lights & Block Island Sound. The chart continues to New York Harbor & Bay, with the Sandy Hook Lightship & the wreck of the Scotland Lightship off the New Jersey coast & depicts the Light at Naversink & the Chapel Hill Light.

Off the coast of Louisiana is the Trinity Shoal Lightship, Timballier Island Lt. & off the Texas coast is the Galveston Harbor light & the Galveston Lightship, Bolivar Point Light, Mstagorda Light, Aransas Pass Light, Corpus Christi Light, & Point Isabel Light at the border.

(Wash) to Puget Sound & West Point Light, Admiralty Head Light & Vancouver Island. Includes the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Ediz Head Light, New Dungeness Lt. , Cape Flattery Lt & Shoalwater Bay Light. The area around Vancouver Island has many beacons & aids to navigation.

Includes a mileage scale & a note that the chart was corrected up to June 30, 1880.

Excellent chart depicts the Lighthouses from Watch Hill, Rhode island to Fisher’s Island, New London to Saybrook Point, New Haven to Stratford, Bridgeport, Stamford, Captain’s Island, Execution Rock & Sands Point. Continues to New York City & the Hudson River with Lighthouses from Peekskill down to Croton, Sing Sing, Tarrytown, Dobb’s Ferry & Yonkers. Includes the Lights along the north shore of Long Island to Montauk. The chart was sold through Darrow & Comstock, Ship Chandlers, New London, CT. Very detailed & in good condition.
