(image size). Lithograph from a painting by Charles E. Turner
(1883-1965), a well-known marine painter whose work is included in the
collection of the National Maritime Museum. The “Caronia” was built by
the John Brown & Co Ltd. shipyard on the River
Clyde in Scotland where she was launched in 1947and set out on her
maiden voyage in January 1949. She was built as a luxurious cruise ship
and painted in distinctive colors of green which was the reason she
earned the nickname of “The Green Goddess.” Most of her life with the
Cunard Line was spent cruising the world,
until Cunard sold her in 1968 to Star Shipping who renamed her “Caribia”
after which she was sold again until she was finally sold for scrap in
1974. A fine ship portrait by a famous marine artist. |

- Cunard “R.M.S. Queen Elizabeth.” London. c. 1963. Colored.
14X24½. Lithograph from a painting by Charles E. Turner (1883-1965.) a
well-known painter of maritime subjects, 8 of which are in the
collection of the National Maritime Museum. The first “Queen Elizabeth”
was built at the shipyard of John Brown & Company on the River Clyde in
Scotland, and launched in 1938. In 1940 at the start of the war in
Europe, she was sent to New York for safety and for fitting out.
However, after 8 months she was ordered to Singapore to be fitted as a
troopship. She survived the war and in 1946 she was refitted in
Southampton as a passenger ship and made her first transatlantic
crossing in the commercial trade at the end of that year. She lasted as
a transatlantic liner until 1968, when Cunard decided that her upkeep
and repairs were too costly to keep her going so they withdrew her from
service, while they built the new QE2, and she was scrapped in 1974.This
is a fine ship portrait of an historic ocean liner. |

MP121
- Cunard “The New Saxonia.” 22,000 tons. London. c. 1963.
Colored. 14X24½. Lithograph from a painting by Charles E. Turner
(1883-1965.) a well-known marine painter whose works are included in the
collections of the National Maritime Museum. The “New Saxonia” was built
by John Brown and Company Ltd on the Clydebank, in Scotland and launched
on February 17, 1954 by Lady Churchill. She made her maiden voyage from
Liverpool to Montreal in September of that year and stayed in the
England to Canada trade until 1961 when Cunard transferred her to the
Liverpool to New York trade for a brief period, before they refitted her
as a cruise ship and changed her name to “Carmania.” Starting in 1962,
she made frequent cruises from Florida to the Caribbean and in 1969 she
ran aground on a sandbank in the West Indies. Needing major repairs and
refitting Cunard put her up for sale in Southampton in 1972 and sold her
to Russian interests. She was scrapped in 1999. This is a colorful ship
portrait by a master marine painter. |
