MASS170 - A. M. PERROT "Environs de Boston dressée pour la lecture de Lionel Lincoln, Roman de J.Fenimore Cooper." Paris. c.1830.6X7. colored. Small but very attractive map of Boston with the title in a laurel wreath tied with a bow. The map was drawn to show the locale of James Fenimore's Cooper's novel "Lionel Lincoln" published in 1825. 18 buildings and landmarks are identified under the map image which shows street block plans with the City with wharves & locates Charlestown, Cambridge, Harvard, Beacon Hill, Coop's Hill, Bunker Hill, the Charles River and the George's Tavern on the road to Roxbury. Shows Gouverneur & Castle Islands at the entrance to the harbor. This is a finely engraved map in delicate coloring with excellent detail.

Includes many rocks, shoals, ledges & headlands and navigational notes on the lighthouse. Hydrography supplied by the party under the command of Lieut H. S. Stellwagen U. S. N.. Excellent harbor chart.

Chart shows Handkerchief Shoal in large scale to indicate changes in its overall size and configuration. Includes region around Monomoy and depicts position of the Light. Comparison is based on a survey of 1853 shown in shaded lines and the present survey (1874-1875) shown in a series of dotted lines. Survey is attractively presented and drawn.

Locates Charles Town and Isle Ronde; gun batteries, powder magazine, Presbyterian church, prison, town hall, windmill and beacon. Indicates an offshore anchorage and the entrance channel. Depicts shoreline topography with roads running down to the harbor showing bays and inlets. Includes a table of reference to major public buildings from A to Q as noted on the chart. A fine example of a scarce chart of Boston drawn when it was Boston Neck.

Depicts Main Street, North and South Streets, Coles Avenue and the Loop Hopkins & Co. Twine Factory. Locates property owners and their landholdings in and around the town. On the verso (back) are maps of 1.Clarksburg, 2.Briggsville and 3.Blackinton, town of Williamstown and Adams. A fine 19th century town plan.

Grey/white. 26X44. Striking very large chart of Boston Harbour shows shoreline contours in fine detail with all offshore islands & thousands of depth soundings. Locates Nantasket Roads, Hingham Bay, President Roads; courses & the Main Ship Channel. Includes excellent detail of buoys & beacons, shoals, ledges & dangerous rocks when entering the harbour. This is an excellent chart in fine condition.

MASS192 - D. APPLETON On the Beverly Coast, Massachusetts, from a painting by J. F. Kensett. New York. 1874. Colored. 6½X9. Finely engraved view shows a coastal scene with sailing vessels offshore & trees, rocks and a beach in the foreground. John Frederick Kensett started his career as an engraver and then became one of the most prominent of the Hudson River School of painters. Although he was known for his Hudson River views, he painted in Europe, and back at home he worked in New York State (Lake George), and painted many scenes of the coast and landscapes of New England. He was born in 1816 and died in 1872. This is a particularly fine engraving taken from Kensett's original work.

Hundreds of depth soundings dot the sea area and detailed courses are shown for entering Woods Hole Harbor between small islands, rocks & ledges. Locates the Breakwater Hotel & the Woods Hole Yacht Club & the U.S. Marine Fisheries Wharf and anchorage. Buoys, beacons & lights are indicated all around the harbor & the current through Woods Hole Passage is noted as having a velocity of 5 knots. An excellent coastal navigational chart. MASS216 - J. DENISON “A Map of Massachusetts From the Best Authorities by J. Denison.” Boston. 1796. Colored. 7½X9¾. Attractive map published in Boston at the end of the 18th century shows Boston & all harbors along the coast from Newbury Harbor & Thatchers Island off Cape Ann down to Cape Cod called Barnstable, Buzzard's Bay & the Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket to Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Under the mileage scale in top right is a note saying “the surveys of the eastern counties could not be obtained seasonably to complete this map” so Plymouth, Bristol & Barnstable counties have only a few towns & harbors located. Of particular interest, however, is a dotted line showing a proposed Cape Cod Canal connecting Buzzard's Bay and Barnstable Bay near Sandwich. This is one of the earliest maps to depict such a concept. Many towns & villages appear on the map which is bordered on the west by the Connecticut River. Asst.” Wash. D.C. 1855. Colored. 8½X9. Small but very detailed chart with hundreds of depth soundings indicated across the Bank with courses depicted along with buoys and beacons. The coast is drawn from Cape Ann and Thatcher's Island & Gloucester down to Boston Harbor, Scituate Lt., Plymouth and Cape Cod Bay. Includes the northern tip of Cape Cod with Provincetown Harbor. Finely engraved by S. W. Bradley.

This is the 3rd chart in a sequence of 3 that charts the coast from Portland, Maine to Race Point on Cape Cod. This section shows a coastal outline from York Harbor, Maine to Portsmouth, New Hampshire and then continues southward to Newburyport and Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Locates Gloucester, Salem and Marblehead and a finely drawn depiction of Boston Harbor and it's approaches. From Boston the coastal outline continues to Scituate and Howland's Ledge with a large area of Massachusetts Bay and Stellwagen's Ledge with hundreds of depth soundings indicated. The chart then ends at the northern tip of Cape Cod and the Race Point Lighthouse. On the right side of the chart is a listing of 34 lighthouses and beacons to be seen from Portland to the Cape, and detailed navigational notes for mariners on tides, bottoms, variations and depth soundings. This is a fine chart in excellent condition.

This beautiful chart of Martha's Vineyard was published in Letters from an American Farmer by Michel-Guillaume St. Jean de Crevecoeur (1735-1813) after he returned to France having spent his early years in America first as a surveyor in the French and Indian Wars and then as a farmer in Colonial America. De Crevecoeur was born in France of aristocratic parents who sent him to college to study mathematics, cartography and surveying. During his time in America he drew surveys of the East Coast and traveled widely and his descriptions of Martha's Vineyard and his map, published in the Letters was widely acclaimed and is considered, to be the first detailed depiction of Martha's Vineyard.. The map shows Vineyard Sound and the Elizabeth Islands, Tidsbury Town, Chapoquidick Island, sheep pastures, Chilmark Town, Cape Pog, Edgar Town and includes a detailed & numbered index to points of interest on the island. A decorative compass rose is engraved in the sea area. Fine.

This is one of George Eldridge's major charts that takes in the Elizabeth Islands, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket and the South Shore of Cape Cod from Falmouth to Chatham and Monomoy. Depicts thousands of depth soundings, detailed courses, small islands, shoals and Chappaquidick on Martha's Vineyard and Tuckernuck Flats on Nantucket. Locates Fishing Grounds, Muskeget Channel and includes an inset titled “Enlarged Plan of Pollock Rip Slue.” The chart also includes detailed navigational notes on sailing directions, tides, buoys, beacons, bottoms, sailing lines, sunken rocks & other dangers. The chart is in relatively good condition considering it has been used and has some wrinkling from wear. An important chart from George Eldridge's original survey and reissued by his son George Washington Eldridge (1845-1914.) and published by Wilfred O. MASS275 - J. F. W. DES BARRES “Untitled Chart of the Eastern Part of Martha's Vineyard.” London. 1776/2002. Hand colored. 30X21½. (Restrike.) This handsome chart shows Cape Poge & Cape Poge Pond, West & East Chop, Matakies Bay, Old Town Harbour, Koteimy Point, Weique Beach, Wasque Point, the Horse Shoe, Muskeget Passage & Muskeget Shoals. Depicts Muskeget Island offshore & Smith's Point. A note on the chart says “To avoid these shoals (Muskeget) keep Cape Poge bearing to the southward of west until you approach the south point of the Horse Shoe, which is steep too. The bearings of Tuckanunck Island, as you draw near it will direct you.” Many depth soundings are indicated with navigational notes, and a course line is drawn through the chart with a note saying “To sail through the Passage (Muskeget) in the deepest water bring Cape Poge to Bear N & W & Steer for It.” The chart also includes a decorative compass pointer with fleur-de-lys motif as an aid to mariners approaching the area from seaward. This fine chart was printed as a restrike from the original copper plates in the collection of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The original chart was published in 1776 in “The Atlantic Neptune” by Joseph F. W. Des Barres, a Swiss who joined the British Army in America in 1756 as an engineer/surveyor. In 1774 Des Barres returned to England to begin the monumental task of compiling his great atlas which he reissued & updated over the next ten years. The chart is in very good condition and is an excellent restrike.

This wonderful birds-eye view of Boston Harbor with Quincy & Dorchester Bays depicts islands & shoreline contours which extend to Cape Cod Bay and Provincetown Light. The Steamboat routes are drawn running into and out of the harbor & include the Metropolitan Line to New York, the routes to Europe, & the route to Provincetown at the end of Cape Cod. The map depicts small drawings of full-rigged ships, steamboats & paddle wheelers, buildings & factories, wharves & piers, flagstaffs, trees, houses & lighthouses, the Quarantine Station, hotels & forts. This delightful map folds down into a small hardcover brochure which makes it a Pocket Map so much desired by tourists & travelers in the late 19th century. Map No.1.“New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad Connections,” (13X10 inches), shows New England with a portion of New York State, & the railroad tracks leading from New York City to Cape Cod & Boston via Connecticut & Rhode Island. The New York, New Haven & Hartford tracks also connect to railroads serving the northeast to Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont & Upper New York State, ending in Montreal & Quebec in Canada. Map No.2 is titled “Map of New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroad. Cape Cod Division. Old Colony System”. (10X15 inches). It depicts the railroad tracks running from Woods Hole to Provincetown through Cape Cod, with other connections leading to New Bedford, Buzzards' Bay, Middleboro, Plymouth, Kingston & Duxbury. In the center is a small inset map with a view of a steamboat & sailing vessels located in offshore waters, and the little map is a reduced version of the primary map showing the railroad tracks from New York City to the Cape. MASS287 - J. F. W. DES BARRES “The Coast of New England.” London 1781.( Restrike 2002). Colored. 21X29½. This fine chart was reproduced from the original copper plate & is an excellent restrike that shows the Massachusetts coast from Cape Ann, Pigeon Hill & Thatcher's Island Light down to Marblehead & the entrance to Boston Harbor. The coast continues down to Plymouth, Barnstable Bay & Cape Cod & includes Buzzard's Bay & a section of Narragansett Bay depicting Newport, Warren & Conanicut Point. Offshore are Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket with hundreds of depth soundings & indications of shoals & low water areas. On the chart is a note saying “The Soundings & Nautical Remarks in this chart are laid down from the Observations of Lieut. Knight of the Navy & Pilots.” Captain Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres (c.1729-1827) was a hydrographer & military engineer from Switzerland who emigrated to England & joined the British Army, then came to America during the Revolutionary War where he surveyed the coasts along with Samuel Holland (1728-1801) & upon his return to England he published his charts in “The Atlantic Neptune” from 1775-1781. In his later years he became the Colonial Administrator in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He died at the age of 98 after a brilliant career as a surveyor & administrator. This fine chart was reproduced from the original copper plate & is an excellent restrike that shows the Massachusetts coast from Little Boars Head down to Plum Island. It depicts Hampton Harbor, Round Rock, Newbury Harbor with wharves & docks & buildings along the shore & includes Salisbury Point, Plum Island Sound & Ipswich Bay. Inland the chart shows topographical details of elevations, roads & rivers, & depicts small black dots indicating houses & commercial buildings throughout the wooded & low scrub terrain. A decorative compass pointer with fleur-de-lys motif & radiating rhumb lines is engraved in the offshore waters of Ipswich Bay. Captain Joseph Wallet Des Barres (c.1729-1827) was a hydrographer, cartographer & military surveyor from Switzerland who emigrated to England and joined the British Army, then came to America during the Revolutionary War where he surveyed the northeast coasts along with Samuel Holland (1728-1801) & upon his return to England he published his charts in “The Atlantic Neptune” from 1775-1781. This great chart of Nantucket shows the Harbor with wharves, Brant Point, Cliff Head, Capum Pond, Matekit Harbor, Smooth Hummock Pond, Micomit Point, Tom Never's Bluff, Siaskonsit, Sankoly Head, Sweseckechi, Squam Bluff, Coskeity Bluff, Galls Rock, Sandy Point & Courtu Point. Inland the chart depicts the Rope Walk, ponds & low scrub vegetation & off the western end of the island is the eastern tip of Tuckanunck Island & East Pond. The chart has a compass with radiating rhumb lines offshore with a note that states “To sail into Nantucket Harbor & Carry the Best Water over the Bar on which is 9 feet, Bring the Light House to Bear S.S.E. then Run for it Giving Brant Point a Birth and Haul In. The Buoy on the East Flat is seen in Day Time.” The chart also depicts beaches, shoals & low water areas.
