MASS170 - A. M. PERROT "Environs de Boston dressée pour la lecture de Lionel Lincoln, Roman de J. Fenimore Cooper." Paris. c.1830.6X7. colored. Small but very attractive map of Boston with the title in a laurel wreath tied with a bow. The map was drawn to show the locale of James Fenimore Cooper's novel "Lionel Lincoln" published in 1825. 18 buildings and landmarks are identified under the map image which shows street block plans with the City with wharves & locates Charlestown, Cambridge, Harvard, Beacon Hill, Coop's Hill, Bunker Hill, the Charles River and the George's Tavern on the road to Roxbury. Shows Gouverneur & Castle Islands at the entrance to the harbor. This is a finely engraved map in delicate coloring with excellent detail.

Includes many rocks, shoals, ledges & headlands and navigational notes on the lighthouse. Hydrography supplied by the party under the command of Lieut. H. S. Stellwagen U. S. N.. Excellent harbor chart.

Attractive plan of early Boston and the harbor showing street block plan of the town and wharves. Locates Charles Town and Isle Ronde; gun batteries, powder magazine, Presbyterian church, prison, town hall, windmill and beacon. Indicates an offshore anchorage and the entrance channel. Depicts shoreline topography with roads running down to the harbor showing bays and inlets. Includes a table of reference to major public buildings from A to Q as noted on the chart. A fine example of a scarce chart of Boston drawn when it was Boston Neck.

Depicts Main Street, North and South Streets, Coles Avenue and the Loop Hopkins & Co. Twine Factory. Locates property owners and their landholdings in and around the town. On the verso (back) are maps of 1.) Clarksburg, 2.) Briggsville and 3.) Blackinton, town of Williamstown and Adams. A fine 19th century town plan.

Hundreds of depth soundings dot the sea area and detailed courses are shown for entering Woods Hole Harbor between small islands, rocks & ledges. Locates the Breakwater Hotel & the Woods Hole Yacht Club & the U.S. Marine Fisheries Wharf and anchorage. Buoys, beacons & lights are indicated all around the harbor & the current through Woods Hole Passage is noted as having a velocity of 5 knots. An excellent coastal navigational chart. MASS219 - U. S. COAST SURVEY “Preliminary Chart of Stellwagen's Bank. Massachusetts Bay discovered in October 1854 by the Hydrographic Party under the Command of Lieut. H. S. Stellwagen U.S.N. Asst.” Wash. D.C. 1855. Colored. 8½X9. Small but very detailed chart with hundreds of depth soundings indicated across the Bank with courses depicted along with buoys and beacons. The coast is drawn from Cape Ann and Thatcher's Island & Gloucester down to Boston Harbor, Scituate Lt., Plymouth and Cape Cod Bay. Includes the northern tip of Cape Cod with Provincetown Harbor. Finely engraved by S. W. Bradley.

MASS220 - U. S. COAST SURVEY “Preliminary Chart #3. The Seacoast of the United States From Portland, Maine, to Race Point, Massachusetts.” Wash. D.C. 1857. B/W. 25¼X21½. This is the 3rd chart in a sequence of 3 that charts the coast from Portland, Maine to Race Point on Cape Cod. This section shows a coastal outline from York Harbor, Maine to Portsmouth, New Hampshire and then continues southward to Newburyport and Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Locates Gloucester, Salem and Marblehead and a finely drawn depiction of Boston Harbor and it's approaches. From Boston the coastal outline continues to Scituate and Howland's Ledge with a large area of Massachusetts Bay and Stellwagen's Ledge with hundreds of depth soundings indicated. The chart then ends at the northern tip of Cape Cod and the Race Point Lighthouse. On the right side of the chart is a listing of 34 lighthouses and beacons to be seen from Portland to the Cape, and detailed navigational notes for mariners on tides, bottoms, variations and depth soundings. This is a fine chart in excellent condition.

MASS222 - SAMPSON & MURDOCK “Map of the City of Boston. Published for the Boston Directory.” Boston. 1910. Printed color. 35X29. Highly colorful map shows the City and its environs and locates wharves, parks, streets, railroads, reservoirs and ponds. Depicts the Charles, Mystic and Chelsea Rivers, East Boston and Charles Town. The Old Harbor and Dorchester Bay and includes an inset chart of Breed's Island. The map was folded into the Directory so it has some light fold lines which could be pressed flat for framing and some light age-toning in the top left corner, not affecting the image. A fine map.

Fine colorful map includes Buzzards Bay, the Elizabeth Islands, Vineyard Sound, Martha's Vineyard, named Dukes, Nantucket & Cape Cod. Depicts railroads leading to Boston and includes a large table in lower left of the “Railways of Massachusetts and Boston & Vicinity Railway Stations.” The map shows counties in different colors and locates cities, towns, villages and harbors. A great map in very nice condition. From “Official Topographical Atlas of Massachusetts From Astronomical, Trigonometrical and various Surveys compiled by H. E. Walling and O. W. Gray.”

Fine small chart from Blunt's “American Coast Pilot” 11th edition, shows the East End of Martha's Vineyard, Falmouth Town, Holmes Hole, West Chop, Vineyard Sound, Chappaquidick, Cape Poge Light and all surrounding shoals and dangers. Includes a compass rose and wind vectors. An excellent small chart.

Fine chart of the coast and harbors from Newburyport south to Cape Ann showing Annisquam, Halibut Point, & Pigeon Cove above Rockport. Depicts Plum Island and Sound, the Joppa Flats, Parker River, Rowley River, Ipswich River, Castle Neck, Essex Bay and Ipswich Bay. Includes many depth soundings, courses, anchorages, buoys, beacons and life saving stations. This excellent chart is in very nice condition and was published in George Eldridge's “Book of Harbor Charts,” No. 55. between 1901 and 1909.

MASS236 - G. ELDRIDGE Cape Cod and Massachusetts Bays Boston. 1901-1909. B/W. 19X13½. Excellent & very detailed chart shows the Cape from Sandwich snd Barnstable, Chatham and Hyannis to Provincetown. Locates Plymouth, Duxbury, Scituate, Hingham, Boston, Lynn, Salem, Marblehead, Manchester, Gloucester and Cape Ann. The chart is crossed with many courses and sailing lines and depicts buoys, beacons, whistles, ledges, shoals, ledges and rocks. Many depth soundings are noted along shorelines and the chart includes an inset of Cohasset Harbor with Minot's Ledge. This is a fine chart from George Eldridge's Book of Harbor Charts #8A.

MASS246 - J. M. CROWLEY and G. R. HOLBROOK “Map of Boston and Path Finder” Boston. c. 1847. Colored highlights. 8X4½. Attractive little map published by the “Path Finder and Business Intelligencer” a paper published every Monday and Thursday to provide information on 'railroads, buses, stages, steamers, packets, hotels and mail arrangements' for the people of Boston. This little map with street block plans shows the State House, City Hall, Post Office, Customs House, Tremont House, Marlboro Hotel and the E. R. R. Hotel and Depot and the Worcester, Western and Old Colony Depots. Also locates the Common, Public Gardens, wharves and bridges. Fine detail.

Hundreds of depth soundings appear in the harbor, with shoals, anchorages, lifesaving stations, rocks and ledges. George Eldridge's harbor charts were much in demand at the turn of the century, by mariners sailing the coasts and entering harbors from offshore locations. MASS275 - J. F. W. DES BARRES “Untitled Chart of the Eastern Part of Martha's Vineyard.” London. 1776/2002. Hand colored. 30X21½. (Restrike.) This handsome chart shows Cape Poge & Cape Poge Pond, West & East Chop, Matakies Bay, Old Town Harbour, Koteimy Point, Weique Beach, Wasque Point, the Horse Shoe, Muskeget Passage & Muskeget Shoals. Depicts Muskeget Island offshore & Smith's Point. A note on the chart says “To avoid these shoals (Muskeget) keep Cape Poge bearing to the southward of west until you approach the south point of the Horse Shoe, which is steep too. The bearings of Tuckanunck Island, as you draw near it will direct you.” Many depth soundings are indicated with navigational notes, and a course line is drawn through the chart with a note saying “To sail through the Passage (Muskeget) in the deepest water bring Cape Poge to Bear N & W & Steer for It.” The chart also includes a decorative compass pointer with fleur-de-lys motif as an aid to mariners approaching the area from seaward. This fine chart was printed as a restrike from the original copper plates in the collection of the Massachusetts Historical Society. The original chart was published in 1776 in “The Atlantic Neptune” by Joseph F. W. Des Barres, a Swiss who joined the British Army in America in 1756 as an engineer/surveyor. In 1774 Des Barres returned to England to begin the monumental task of compiling his great atlas which he reissued & updated over the next ten years. The chart is in very good condition and is an excellent restrike.

Depicts the shorelines of Cape Cod Bay & Nantucket Sound & includes towns, roads, rivers, ponds, beaches & the Old Colony Railroad, Cape Cod Branch. The chart is a U. S. MASS287 - J. F. W. DES BARRES “The Coast of New England.” London 1781.( Restrike 2002). Colored. 21X29½. This fine chart was reproduced from the original copper plate & is an excellent restrike that shows the Massachusetts coast from Cape Ann, Pigeon Hill & Thatcher's Island Light down to Marblehead & the entrance to Boston Harbor. The coast continues down to Plymouth, Barnstable Bay & Cape Cod & includes Buzzard's Bay & a section of Narragansett Bay depicting Newport, Warren & Conanicut Point. Offshore are Martha's Vineyard & Nantucket with hundreds of depth soundings & indications of shoals & low water areas. On the chart is a note saying “The Soundings & Nautical Remarks in this chart are laid down from the Observations of Lieut. Knight of the Navy & Pilots.” Captain Joseph Frederick Wallet Des Barres (c.1729-1827) was a hydrographer & military engineer from Switzerland who emigrated to England & joined the British Army, then came to America during the Revolutionary War where he surveyed the coasts along with Samuel Holland (1728-1801) & upon his return to England he published his charts in “The Atlantic Neptune” from 1775-1781. In his later years he became the Colonial Administrator in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He died at the age of 98 after a brilliant career as a surveyor & administrator. ( This restrike was engraved from the original copper plates in the possession of the Massachusetts Historical Society in August/September 2002.)

This fine chart was reproduced from the original copper plate & is an excellent restrike that shows the Massachusetts coast from Little Boars Head down to Plum Island. It depicts Hampton Harbor, Round Rock, Newbury Harbor with wharves & docks & buildings along the shore & includes Salisbury Point, Plum Island Sound & Ipswich Bay. Inland the chart shows topographical details of elevations, roads & rivers, & depicts small black dots indicating houses & commercial buildings throughout the wooded & low scrub terrain. A decorative compass pointer with fleur-de-lys motif & radiating rhumb lines is engraved in the offshore waters of Ipswich Bay. Captain Joseph Wallet Des Barres (c.1729-1827) was a hydrographer, cartographer & military surveyor from Switzerland who emigrated to England and joined the British Army, then came to America during the Revolutionary War where he surveyed the northeast coasts along with Samuel Holland (1728-1801) & upon his return to England he published his charts in “The Atlantic Neptune” from 1775-1781. This fine chart of Nantucket Harbor shows the entrance to the Harbor between Brant Point & Coatue Point. Depicts street block plan of the town & harbor, & locates commercial buildings & wharves where the fishing boats tie up & the ferries from Woods Hole and Hyannis dock on a daily basis. The chart shows Shimmo Point & Pinny's Point, buoys & beacons & notes on tides & courses. Depicts hundreds of depth soundings offshore & in the Harbor entrance. This chart #343 was taken from the chartroom of the U. S. S. Inaugural, a World War II Minesweeper, built in 1944, which became, after the War, a Museum Ship on the St. Louis, Missouri waterfront & was sunk when the Mississippi River flooded in 1993.

The charts in the chartroom were saved before the ship went down.

This fine chart was taken from the chartroom of the U.S.S. Inaugural, a WWII Minesweeper, which, after the War, became a Museum Ship on the St. Louis, Missouri waterfront, until 1993 when she sank after the Mississippi River flooded it's banks after a major storm. Includes Fish Island with the Acushnet Iron Works, Crow Island, Pope's Island & Palmer's Island & locates the New Bedford & Fair Haven Bridge connecting the two cities across the river. Includes the Oak Hill Cemetery, the Town Hall, schools, churches, mills & hotels. This fine map has excellent details & was published by H. F. Walling & Ormando W. Gray in their “Official Topographical Atlas of Massachusetts ” in 1871.

Also includes a mileage scale with 2½ miles to an inch. Locates New Bedford, Fairhaven & Westport & the coast from Mattapoisett Harbor down to Westport Harbor, The map also locates Fall River, Somerset & Swansea & Little Compton in Rhode Island. George Walker was a well-known lithographer & publisher of maps & atlases in Boston in the late 19th century who specialized in maps & atlases of the cities & towns in the State of Massachusetts. Includes a Reference Table indicating primary places in Boston such as Faneuil Hall & Dock Square, Old South Meeting House, Beacon Hill, Fort Hill, Cops Hill, Fort on Nodalles Island erected after Boston was evacuated, & includes battle grounds & sieges indicated by flags. The map was engraved by Joseph Yeager for the 1832 edition of John Marshall's “Life of Washington.” First issued in 1804. Published by J. Crissy, Philadelphia 1832. Very good condition.

Depicts depth soundings, both within the harbor and offshore, a street block plan of Gloucester, the Western Harbor, Ten Pound Island & Light, Southeast Harbor, Norman's Woe Cove, Eastern Point, Fresh Pond & Braces Cove. Includes many rocks, shoals and headlands & includes navigational notes on lighthouses. Hydrography supplied by the Party under the Command of Lieut. H. S. Stellwagen. U.S.N. This is an excellent harbor chart.

This fine Geologic Survey was drawn by N. S. Shaler for the Seventh Annual Report issued by the U. S. Government in Washington, D.C. in 1888. Good condition.

Striking and colorful map of Martha's Vineyard shows the island surrounded by sailing vessels, steamers, fishing boats, excursion steamers & coastal sloops. Depicts the sailing lines & distances from major places & harbors of interest to visitors to the island & notes that the distance from Portland, Maine to New York is 354 miles. The map shows Vineyard Haven harbor, Edgartown, Chappaquidick, Menemsha Bight, Oak Bluffs, Chilmark & Tisbury, Cape Poge & Gay Head. Includes a tourist booklet and a small inset titled “Plan Showing the relative position of Martha's Vineyard with the Mainland.” The map was folded into the booklet but has been pressed flat and is in very good condition. A fine example of a great map.
