Connecticut. The Connecticut shore is shown from Nianrtic Bay to New
London, Mystic, Stonington and thence to Watch Hill Point (Rhode Island)
and Point Judith near the entrance to Narragansett Bay. The chart is
dotted with hundreds of depth soundings and depicts both topographical
and hydrographical details, and includes courses and navigational notes
on radio beacon signals, improved channels and Fish Trap areas. The
chart is a little dusty from use and has some folds but is overall in

Corners, Windmill Hill, Little Compton Church Spire and Church Cove, and
small islands at the Sakonnet River entrance.
The Westport chart shows Westport Harbor, Horse Neck Pont and beach and
Westport Point, and the Point Judith chart was included as a “Harbor of
Refuge” for mariners rounding the Point into
Narragansett Bay from Long Island Sound, needing a safe anchorage and a

cemetery, mineral springs, windmill, Sandy Point Lighthouse, Mohegan
Bluffs, Pilot Hill and Beacon Hill. Includes a booklet titled “Block
Island. Map and Guide, and A History (Abridged).” written by the Rev. S.
T. Livermore A.M. The booklet contains a detailed text about the
island's history and a guide to the hotels, and includes engraved views
of the hotels and prominent island features along with a portrait of the
Rev. Livermore. The map was drawn by J. C. Thompson, Providence, R.I.
who also provided a small inset chart of Mass. Conn. & R.I. showing the
position of Block Island The condition of the map is excellent, but the
booklet has had some minor repairs to the binding. This is a rare issue.

Warwick Neck, Warren, Fall River, Gaspee Point & W. Barrington. Includes
anchorages, buoys and beacons and detailed courses for sailing into &

Colored. 10X8. Map shows townships with colored borders and includes
Block Island and the eastern end of Fisher's Island in Long Island
Sound. Depicts Prudence and Conanicut islands in Narragansett Bay along
with Newport and Little Compton and Tiverton on the Sakonnet River. This
attractive early map was drawn under the direction of Samuel Lewis
(c.1754-1822) a Philadelphia geographer, publisher, draughtsman and
“writing master.” His cartographic work was extremely prolific as he was
the official draughtsman to the Lords Commissioners for Trade &
Plantations and he provided maps for dozens of atlases & publications.
He was also an Aide to General George Washington. This attractive map
was published in “A New and Elegant General Atlas” printed by John
Conrad for Arrowsmith & Lewis & engraved by A. Lawson. |

East Passage, North Kingstown, Prudence Island & Pt. Judith at the
entrance to the Bay. Locates rivers & ponds, townships & county
boundaries & includes the northern tip of Block Island offshore. A
decorative compass rose with fleur-de-lys pointer and a mileage scale
are drawn in lower right. The map is considered to be the first American
map of Rhode Island. Drawn by Harding Harris from surveys & observations

to Dutch Island & Newport across Narragansett Bay. The chart is dotted
with hundreds of depth soundings & Brenton's Reef is drawn at the
entrance to the Bay where a large compass rose with radiating rhumb
lines is situated as an aid to mariners approaching the coast prior to
entering Narragansett Bay from offshore waters. Published by E. & G. W.
Blunt in 1838 & included in their American Coast Pilot of 1841. The
chart was engraved by William Hooker. |

birds-eye view of the town & harbor. The map depicts street block plans
& the routes of the 2 steamboat lines, the Fall River Line & the Newport
Line, circling the harbor. Includes wharves & piers & offshore islands,
beaches, casino, the State House & the Club House, Jamestown & the
Jamestown Ferry. This little gem of a booklet has an index of places
under the map, and a colorful front cover that depicts 2 large sailboats
racing off Newport Harbor. Printed by Rand Avery in 1902 it was
published for the Passenger Dept. of the New York, New Haven & Hartford
Railroad. |

highly detailed Business Directory listing the names of attorneys,
booksellers, butchers, grocery & hardware merchants, city officers, coal
& wood dealers, druggists, hotels, physicians etc. The overall map
provides a great insight into life on Block Island in the late 19th

Colored. 8¼X7½. Small, but very detailed chart depicts a block plan of
Newport Harbor with wharves & piers, across Narragansett Bay from
Conanicut Island (Jamestown). Shows Coaster's Island Harbor, Fort Adams
on the Neck, Rose Island, Goat Island & Dutch Island. Hundreds of depth
soundings are indicated in the Bay & around the islands, indicating
course lines & a compass rose is placed in lower right as an aid to
mariners entering Narragansett Bay from offshore. The chart was drawn in
1847 for the 16th Edition of Edmund Blunt's “American Coast Pilot.” Then
reduced & engraved by William Hooker for the 1850 Edition. Edmund March
Blunt (1770-1862) was a well-known publisher of charts & pilots in the
early 19th century, & his “American Coast Pilot” went through many
editions from 1796-1867. This is an attractive chart in very nice
condition.

harbor, Coddington Cove, Rose Island & Goat Island off Newport Harbor,
with the location of a U.S. Torpedo Station. Many depth soundings are
indicated in the Bay & the map includes an inset titled Newport &
Vicinity. This is an attractive little chart of Newport & Narragansett
Bay. |
