post-roads connecting towns. Includes a compass rose and an ornamental
title cartouche engraved as a monument in a decorative scene with trees
and a shoreline with a boat & hills in the distance. A rare and
scarce map. |

Northumberland border on the east and the Firth of Clyde on the west
coast. Locates all major harbors & Firths; capes and bays.
Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness & the Murray
Firth. Tayn, Dornoch, Caithness, Strathnavern, Southerland, Assynt,
Ross, Lochaber, Argyle and islands off the western coast - Skie, Mull,
Iura, Colonsay, Ila, Cantir, Arran & the Hebrides Isles. Chart shows
castles along the coasts; many soundings along the eastern coast; the
Orkney & Shetland Islands and includes an inset chart titled "A
Plan of Holy Island and the Staples" on the Northumberland coast,
showing Bambro Castle, the islands in detail and a large compass rose.
Chart has a decorative title cartouche with leaf, flower, thistle and

London 1698. Colored. 17¼X22. Very striking chart of the Orkney Islands
off the northern coast of Scotland, shows the region from Pomona &
Kirkwall to Rowsay. Includes Shapinsha (Shapinsay), Eglesha, Wyre,
Garsay & Green Island. Two inset charts are depicted at base of chart,
one showing Pomona Harbour & Dear Sound, Mulhead, Nestin & Linknesse.
The other showing Hoy & Hoy Mouth with Stromnesse & Cairston. Also
includes 5 landfall approach views of the approaches to Mulhead, Faire
Isle, the Maiden Papp's & Dunkins Bay Head. This fine chart was drawn with
west at the top in the 17th century manner and includes detailed depth
soundings and anchorages throughout the region. The title in top right
is held up on a banner by two large sea birds with wings outstretched
and large splayed feet. From Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, first
published in 1693 by Capt. Greenville Collins, the first hydrographer
appointed by the Admiralty, to survey the coasts of England, Scotland,
Wales and adjacent islands. A very fine early chart. |

Scotland's northwest coast. A very colorful map with a decorative border
frame. Published by Joseph Hutchins Colton (1800-1893) who founded the
mapmaking & publishing family firm in 1831 at 9 Wall Street, New York
