Scotland

SCOT101 - T. KITCHIN "A New Map of Berwick Shire from the best Authorities" London. 1772. Colored. 6¾X9. Attractive early map shows Berwick at the mouth of the River Tweed with Magdalin House nearby, on the coast. Map shows many market towns & villages and the region of Lauderdale. Locates parks, manors & castles and post-roads connecting towns. Includes a compass rose and an ornamental title cartouche engraved as a monument in a decorative scene with trees and a shoreline with a boat & hills in the distance. A rare and scarce map.

Very clearly delineated map shows a small block plan of Glasgow with roads leading to it and the Great Canal and the River Clyde on either side of the city. Map also shows Stirling & the Forth River. Falkirk. Linlithgow, Culross & many smaller market towns & villages. Rivers & lochs & the Roman road to Lanerk.

SCOT113 - H. MOLL "North Britain; or Scotland" London 1723. 9X7. with text. Colored. Attractive early map shows all major harbors, market towns & villages. Firths, lakes, rivers, mountains and the offshore Hebrides and Orkney Islands. Includes a very decorative title cartouche with scroll and leaf motifs. On the back of the map (verso) is a text with description of the Isle of Man. Sea areas are designated "The British Sea."

Map shows the three island groups with primary harbors & sounds and elevations expressed in yards. The Shetlands are noted as having 32 inhabited islands; the Orkneys, 29 inhabited islands. Locates the Minch and the Island of Skye; the Pentland Frith, Scapa Flow & Stronsa Frith; and many small islands offshore including Coll & Tirey, Fair, St. Kilda & North Rona.

Handsome sea-chart shows Scotland from the Newcastle & Northumberland border on the east and the Firth of Clyde on the west coast. Locates all major harbors & Firths; capes and bays. Edinburgh, St. Andrews, Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness & the Murray Firth. Tayn, Dornoch, Caithness, Strathnavern, Southerland, Assynt, Ross, Lochaber, Argyle and islands off the western coast - Skie, Mull, Iura, Colonsay, Ila, Cantir, Arran & the Hebrides Isles. Chart shows castles along the coasts; many soundings along the eastern coast; the Orkney & Shetland Islands and includes an inset chart titled "A Plan of Holy Island and the Staples" on the Northumberland coast, showing Bambro Castle, the islands in detail and a large compass rose. Chart has a decorative title cartouche with leaf, flower, thistle and scroll motifs and a colorful compass rose in top center.

Many old place names appear throughout, some with early spelling forms. Shows rivers, mountain ranges, capes, bays, firths & inlets.

Locates Edinburgh, Dumbarton, Aberdeen, Fort William, Kirkudbright & the Firth of Forth, Murray Firth, & the Firth of Clyde. Includes the Hebrides, Shetland and Orkney Islands and an interesting scene in top left showing 4 men in a boat tearing down columns from a large building built in a cliff over the water. Greenville Collins, Hydrographer to the King. London 1698. Colored. 17¼X22. Very striking chart of the Orkney Islands off the northern coast of Scotland, shows the region from Pomona & Kirkwall to Rowsay. Includes Shapinsha (Shapinsay), Eglesha, Wyre, Garsay & Green Island. Two inset charts are depicted at base of chart, one showing Pomona Harbour & Dear Sound, Mulhead, Nestin & Linknesse. The other showing Hoy & Hoy Mouth with Stromnesse & Cairston. Also includes 5 landfall approach views of the approaches to Mulhead, Faire Isle, the Maiden Papp's & Dunkins Bay Head. This fine chart was drawn with west at the top in the 17th century manner and includes detailed depth soundings and anchorages throughout the region. The title in top right is held up on a banner by two large sea birds with wings outstretched and large splayed feet. From Great Britain's Coasting Pilot, first published in 1693 by Capt. Greenville Collins, the first hydrographer appointed by the Admiralty, to survey the coasts of England, Scotland, Wales and adjacent islands. A very fine early chart.

Very detailed map shows counties in different colors with all principal cities, towns & harbors, roads, railroads, rivers, firths and offshore islands. Includes 2 inset maps 1. Okrney Islands and 2. Shetland Islands. Depicts the Hebrides or Western Isles off Scotland's northwest coast. A very colorful map with a decorative border frame.

Fine map of the City of Edinburgh shows street block plans, parks, public buildings, Arthur's Seat, Royal Terrace, Calton Hill, Edinburgh Castle and Castle Hill, High Street and Canongate. Depicts the North Loch, Edinburgh Academy and includes a finely engraved scene in top left of Edinburgh Castle. The map was reduced under the Superintendene of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge with the permission of Messrs Laing and Forbes from their large Plan.

Depicts steamship routes from Scottish ports to London, Belfast & Northern Scotland, and in and out of the Firths and Sounds around the coast. The map also shows primary roads, railroads, submarine telegraph lines, canals, lighthouses and important battlefields and all of the offshore islands. Includes a detailed map of Glasgow and Edinburgh as an inset in top left and another inset of the Shetland Islands in upper right. A fine map. From C. S. Hammond's “New World Atlas”.

Handsome map of Scotland with Counties in different colors, includes the Hebrides, Orkney & Shetland Islands, plus all major cities, towns & harbors around the coasts. Locates the Firth of Forth, the Firth of Clyde & Murray Firth & depicts dozens of small islands on Scotland's eastern shore. Also depicts canals, rivers, roads & railroads. This fine, colorful map was published by Thomas Cowperthwait, printer of Philadelphia, in 1850, for Samuel Augustus Mitchell's “New Universal Atlas.”

SCOT141 - A. REES “Scotland” Phila. 1806. Colored. 15½X9¾. This very detailed map of Scotland shows all the offshore islands including the Hebrides, Orkneys & Shetlands and the smaller islands off the western coast. Depicts counties, cities, towns, villages, harbors, firths & forths, rivers, mountain ranges & lochs. A small inset map in top left shows the Shetland Islands on the same scale as the primary map. The map was compiled by Abraham Rees (1743-1825) a Welsh mathematician, encyclopedist & map publisher and issued in his “The Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences & Literature.” printed in Philadelphia by S. Bradford in 1806. Good detail.
