B/W. 33½X22½. Fine large vertical chart shows Hilton Head Island, Parry
Island, St Helena Island, Philip's Island, St. Michael, Daw Island, &
Lemon Island. Depicts the Broad River leading to Port Royal Sound, Port
Royal Island, Beaufort and White Hall. Includes Ladies Island, Coosaw &
Morgan Islands, & Cane Island. Hundreds of depth soundings are depicted
throughout and the chart includes detailed navigational notes on sailing
directions, tides and courses and shows the Martin's Industry Light
Vessel, off Port Royal Entrance. A handsome chart in fine condition. |

different colors and depicts primary cities, towns and harbors, roads,
railroads and canals. Includes a table of Stage and Steamboat routes
from Savannah to Augusta and Charleston to Savannah and includes a
detailed street block plan of Charleston and a table of references to
the City. On the map the land distances from town to town are noted

R. COWLEY “Charles Town, South Carolina with a Chart of the Bars and
Harbour.”
London. 1780. B/W. 7½X7¾. Map shows Charleston and the Gaddesden
Fort between the Astley and Cooper Rivers. Depicts Shutes Folly, Hobcaw
Point, Hog Island, Farquharsons Distillery, Gaddesdens Bridge and a
Redoubt to defend the Bridge, Fort Johnston and Cummins Point where “a
Fort is contracted for on this Point.” Two small ship drawings appear
off Cummins Point, where the Actron (Actaeon) and Sphinx were burnt
during the engagement at Sullivan's Island in 1776. This is a finely
engraved Revolutionary War map included in the Westminster Magazine in
London in 1780 and published by Fielding and Walker and engraved by John
Lodge (fl.1755-1796) a prominent London 18th century geographer and
engraver. A scarce issue. |

map from a Guide Book, shows street block plan of Charleston between the
Ashley and Cooper Rivers. Map names streets and includes a numbered
reference table indicating locations of public buildings such as the
City Hall, Fire House, Medical College, Marine Hospital, Masonic Hall,
Railroad Depot, Markets, Court House, hotels and wharves. (Very light
staining in lower outer margin not affecting image, otherwise good.)

Historiique De La Caroline Du Sud.” paris 1825/1829. Colored. Map
engraved image size = 12X14 inches, map plus surrounding text = 18½X24
inches. Very finely engraved map of South Carolina shows Counties in
different colors, & depicts Augusta & Charleston and all major cities,
towns, harbors and settlements. Depicts rivers inland with hills and
mountain ranges. Around the map is a lot of very detailed text covering
the history of the State & it's economy, trade & commerce, climate,
changing population figures, plus a list of Governors from 1670-1829,
and a list of battles and sieges from 1776-1781.
The map is from Jean Alexandre Buchon's (1791-1846) “Atlas
Geographique, Statistique, Historique et Chronologique des Deux
Ameriiques,” published in Paris in 1825, as the French Edition of Carey
& Lea's “American Atlas” of 1822. A handsome map in very nice condition.

NY. 1857. Colored. 5X6. Small, intensely detailed map of the State
shows cities, towns, villages & harbors as they were located in the
middle of the 19th century. The map is criss-crossed with roads and
railroads linking major centers & the Savannah River flows down to the
coast along the border with Georgia. In lower left is a small inset map
depicting Charleston between the Ashley & Cooper Rivers, showing James,
Folly and Morris Islands and the entrance to Charleston' Harbor.
Published in 1857 by Samuel N. Gaston in “The Diamond Atlas” it was
drawn & edited by Charles G. Colby (1830-1866.) A charming little map
that would look attractive framed. |

Paris. 1825. Colored. 12½X14¼. Very colorful map of the State of
South Carolina, shows counties in different colors & the coast from the
border with North Carolina down to Georgetown, Cape Romain, Charleston,
Port Royal, Hilton Head & Savannah, Georgia. Inland shows major cities,
towns and villages & depicts Walterborough, Orangeburg, Burlington,
Darlington & Saundersville, with mountain ranges, & rivers flowing
throughout the State & down to the coast. Locates, churches, post
offices, meeting houses, schools, ponds, creeks & swamps. The map was
published by Jean Alexandre Buchon (1791-1846) in “Atlas Geographique,
Historique, Statistique et Chronologique Des Deux Ameriques” in 1825
which was the French edition of Carey & Lea's American Atlas of 1822,
wherein this map was first drawn under the direction of Samuel Lewis
(c.1754-1822) a foremost Philadelphia geographer & draughtsman. This is
an attractive State map in fine color. |

H. MOLL “A Plan of Port Royal: Harbour in Carolina with Proposed Forts,
Depth of Water Etc. Latitude 32°6 North According to the Original
Draught by H. Moll.”
London. 1729. Colored. 8X10½. Fine early chart by Herman Moll
(c.1654-1732) one of the foremost mapmakers & geographers in 18th
century London depicts Hilton Head, Port Royal Island with Elizabeth
Point, St. Helena Island with Phillips Point & a proposed fort & a note
indicating good water on the eastern shore of the island. The chart
shows anchorages, shoals, low water areas & many depth soundings in &
around the channel leading into the Harbour. A note on the chart reads
“Port Royal River lies 20 leagues from Ashley River S.W. It has a bold
entrance 10 or 20 foot at low water. The Harbour is large, safe and
commodious & runs into ye best country in Carolina. Here ye air is
alwaes cleer & agreeable to European Constituions. It flows 9 foot.
1728.” The chart was published in “Atlas Minor or a New and Curious Set
of Sixty Two Maps in which are Shewn all the Empires, Kingdoms,
Countries, States in all the Known Parts of the Earth” by Herman Moll. A
fine map in very nice condition. |

- J. HINTON “A New and Accurate Map of the Province of South Carolina in
North America.”
London. 1779.Colored. 13X11. This fine map traces the
coast of South Carolina from Kingston Township & All Saints down to
Prince George & the Georgetown Entrance of Winyah Harbour. From there
the coast continues south to Sullivan's Isle & Charles Town Harbour, St.
Helena Sound, Port Royal & Savannah Sound, Georgia. Inland the map shows
townships, rivers, the Path from the Cherokee crossing the northwest
corner of the State & the State Boundary Line set up in 1772. In lower
right is a decorative hillside scene with trees & vegetation upon which
the title is engraved. This attractive early map was published in “The
Universal Magazine of knowledge and Pleasure containing news, letters,
debates, poetry, musick, biography, history, geography, voyages,
criticism, translations, philosophy, mathematicks, husbandry, gardening,
cookery, chemistry, mechanics, navigation, architecture & other arts &
sciences.” Published by John Hinton in late 18th century London the
Universal Magazine was immensely popular, & soon outstripped it's rivals
the Gentleman's and London Magazines, in sales & popularity. |

NY. 1891. Colored. 16½X27¼. Fine Civil War map shows street block plan
of Charleston & the Cooper & Ashley Rivers. Depicts forts, roads, depth
soundings in the entrance to Charleston Harbor & shows Daniel's Island &
the Wando River, John's Island & St. Andrew's Parish & the sea coast
from Cummings Point down to Folly Island. Includes 2 inset charts 1.)
Map of New Berne, N.C. & It's Defenses, & 2.) Diagrams Illustrating
Divisions Occupied by the Army During the Battle of Atlanta, Ga. This
fine map was published by Julius Bien for “The Atlas To Accompany the
Official Records of the Union & Confederate Armies. 1861-1865.” Julius
Bien (1826-1909) was a well-known lithographer who published many
atlases & maps in the 19th century. He worked extensively for the U. S.
Government, & at one point in his career he employed more than 200
people and had several copperplate & lithographic presses. His work was
considered excellent. (Ref. Tooley's Dictionary of Mapmakers. Vol. 1.
page 137.)

1891. Colored. 18¼X27¼. Excellent map shows a block plan of Charleston &
the Ashley & Cooper Rivers & the contours of the harbor with forts &
defenses along shorelines. Hundreds of depth soundings are indicated in
the harbor entrance & offshore. Depicts James Island & the coast down to
Folly Island, Folly River & Stono Inlet. Includes a landfall approach
view of Fort Sumter at 3½ miles distant, as an aid to mariners
approaching the harbor from offshore, and 2 inset charts 1.) Plan of
Belmont From a Survey Made in 1862, & 2.) The Battle Near Belmont,
Missouri in 1861.Published by Julius Bien (1826-1909), a well known 19th
century cartographer & lithographer, for “The Atlas to Accompany the
Official Records of the Union & Confederate Armies. 1861-1865.” This is
a finely detailed map in very good condition.

- J. MARSHALL “Plan of the Siege of Charleston in South Carolina.”
Phila. 1807. Colored. 9½X14½. Fine Revolutionary War map shows
Charleston & it's Harbor during the Siege & depicts block plan of
Charleston City & it's wharves with small ships anchored along the shore
& a Boom laid across the entrance to the Cooper River. Ships of the
British fleet are anchored off Fort Johnston & Galleys and Gun Boats are
anchored in the middle of the Ashley River. Also depicted are the
British camps, a hospital & a distillery. Fort Moultrie stands guard at
the Harbor entrance across from Fort Johnston on James Island. The map
was issued in the Atlas to Accompany John Marshall's “Life of
Washington,” engraved by Benjamin Tanner (1775-1848) & published by
Caleb Parry Wayne (1776-1849.) Light centerfold crease & some light
age-toning around outer marginal areas, otherwise very good condition. |
