- JOHN MALHAM "A Correct Chart of Portugal
Engraved for Malham's Naval Gazatteer" Boston. 1804. 9¼X7¼. Colored.
Very attractive small chart from Malham's original London edition of
1795, shows Portugal and the coast from Vigo down to Cape St.
Vincent
locating Oporto, Lisbon, Setuval, Faro & Sevilla and many small harbors
along the coast. Depicts rivers flowing to the sea and depicts Entre
Douro E. Minho, Beira and Estramadura. Title is in a decorative oval in
fine calligraphy and chart includes a compass rose with fleur de lys &
radiating rhumb lines in sea areas. Also detailed depth soundings are
given off the coast. |

Paris. 1812. Colored. 12X8¾. Intensely detailed map of the western
regions of Spain with Portugal. Locates Gallicia on Spain's northwest
coast ( present day La Coruna), and the coast of Portugal from Douro and
Minho & the harbor of Porto down to Lisbon & Cape St. Vincent. Shows the
southwest coast to Cape Trafalgar & the Straits of Gibraltar & continues
to Malaga in Spain & Cape Sacritif, depicting Grenada inland from the
coast. Attractive scene in lower left depicts the Rock of Gibraltar with
fortifications and the Bay beneath it. From Atlas Complet by C. Malte

una cum Regno Algarbiae Speciali Mappa Exhibitum Per Ioh.Bapt. Homannum.”
Nurnberg. 1736. Colored. 23¼X18. Very detailed
early map of Portugal shows the seacoast from Cap de Silleiro down to
Cap. St. Vincent.
Locates Oporto & the entrance to the River Douro showing it's passage
across the country. Depicts Lisbon & the Bay of Setubal & hundreds of
cities, towns & villages across the country to the Spanish border and
south to the Algarve & the Mediterranean Sea and the Bay of Cadiz. This
beautiful map was published by Jean B. Nolin in 1736 and it was also
republished in 1752 in “Atlas Compendiarius”.
Title in top left is surrounded by a very decorative cartouche topped
with a crown and shield & ornamented with leaves & scrolls and figures
carrying baskets of produce. A lovely map of a beautiful country. |

Paris. 1751, Colored.19X20¼. Handsome 18th century map of Portugal by a
premier French cartographer/engraver shows Portugal's west coast from Viana to Oporto & the entrance to the River Douro showing the passage of
the river across the country. Locates Aveiro, Coimbra, Leiria & Santaren
and the chart ends at Lago de Obedos. Rivers & mountains are depicted
throughout the country with hundreds of cities, towns & villages. The
title in top left is in an ornamental cartouche with shell, scroll,
leaves & urn motifs in the French 18th century style. From

Grenade Par le Sr Robert de Vaugondy fils de Mr. Robert. Geog.du Roi
avec Privilege 1749.” Paris. 1749. Colored. 6¼X8½. Finely drawn map by a
major French 18th century cartographer, Robert de Vaugondy, shows
southern Spain and a small section of Portugal depicting Andalousie and
Grenade on the Mediterranean coast. Locates the Straits of Gibraltar,
Tangier and the northern Coast of Africa called Fez. Includes many
harbors and inland towns and cities. A very nice early 18th century map.

“Lisbon. (Lisboa).”
London. 1833. Partial color. 12½X15½. Fine map of the city of Lisbon
(Portugal) and it's harbor on the River Tagus. The map shows a street
block plan of the city locating public buildings, a palace, churches,
parks, docks, arsenals and waterfront roads with marine terminals. Below
the map is a finely engraved scene of the city with buildings and an old
fort on a hillside overlooking the water in the distance and titled
“Lisbon From the Quinta da Torrinha Val de
Pereiro.” In top right is an inset map titled
“The Environs of Lisbon.”
The map was drawn by W. B.
Clarke, Arch. and engraved and printed
by J. Henshall. It was published by Baldwin and Cradock under the
“Superintendence of the Society for the
Diffusion of Useful Knowledge.” A very
attractive map, finely engraved. |

Paris. 1780. Colored. 9¼X13½. Attractive map by a premier 18th century
French hydrographer, shows the southern regions of Spain along the
Mediterranean Sea coast. Depicts the Straits of Gibraltar and the Duchys
of Grenada, Estramadura and Murcie. Locates the cities of Granada,
Seville, Cordova, Medina Sidonia, Murcia & Alicante, and along the coast
the map depicts Cartagena, Muxacar, Almeria, Malaga, Gibraltar and Cadiz
with many smaller towns and harbors throughout the region. The map is
finely engraved and the cities, towns and
harbors are clearly delineated. Very nice condition. |

Paris. 1783. Outline color. 8½X12½. Intensely detailed map of Spain and
Portugal shows many cities, towns and harbors. Depicts the Straits of
Gibraltar and the Mediterranean Sea with the islands of Iviza, Majorca
and Minorca clearly delineated. From “Recueil des Cartes Sur la
Geographie Ancienne” published in Paris in 1783 by Rigobert Bonne
(1727-1795), the head of the Dept. de la Marine in Paris, with Nicolas
Demarest. |

Dufour.” Paris. c. 1838-45. Colored. 12¼X9½. Finely engraved map
shows the east coast of Spain with the focus on the Balearic Islands of
Majorca, Menorca & Iviza, off the coast of Spain in the Mediterranean
Sea. Depicts harbors around the islands & locates Barcelona & the
primary harbors on the mainland of Spain. The map was published in
“Atlas Nacional de Espana” engraved by Erhard Schiele & printed by
Gustave Barba. The cartographer was Auguste-Henri Durour (1798-1865),
a well-known mapmaker and publisher in 19th century Paris. |
