1781. Colored. 9X12½. This fine map shows Turkey in Europe bordering the
Greek Archipelago & the Aegean Sea with all the Greek Islands and the
city of Athens on Greece's eastern coast. Includes Macedonia & Rumania,
the city of Constantinople, the Sea of Marmara
& the Black Sea. Locates Smyrna on Turkey's western coast along with
Gallipoli and the Dardanelles. The islands of
Rhodes, Scapanto and Crete are located in the Mediterraneanean

map is on Turkey in Asia, showing the Black Sea, the Crimea & the Sea of Azov and the provinces of Garamanie, Roum, Armenie, Aderbijan, Curdistan,
Irac-Ajemi, Irac-Arabi, Gezira & Persia. Includes the Arabian Desert,
Syria, Palestine, the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. This fine map shows
the regions & boundaries as they were known to 18th century

Gouvernements.” Paris. 1783. Colored. 7¼X10. Finely drawn and
engraved map of the region in Europe located between the Black Sea, the
Sea of Marmara, the Aegean Sea, the Gulf of Venice & the Mediterranean
Sea. The region is comprised of Turkey, Bulgaria, Roumania, Greece,
Bosnia, Jugoslavia and the coast of Dalmatia. The map has a Table down
the right side listing the countries and capital cities & their
latitudes. Includes the islands of Crete and Cyprus (Candie and Chipre).
Engraved by Jean Lattre (d.1782) Chief Engraver to King Louis XVI in
Paris & published in “Petit Atlas Moderne ou Collection de Cartes
Elementaire.” The title in lower left is in a decorative cartouche
ornamented with scrolls, leaves & flowers. |

decorative map of Turkey in Asia with colorful vignettes of Jerusalem,
“The Castles of Europe & Asia”, an Ostrich-like bird & a group of people
in native dress talking together with a monument in the background. The
map shows the Black Sea, Constantinople & the Sea of Marmara. Includes
the Aegean sea-coast, with islands, & Cyrpus in the eastern
Mediterranean with the coast of Syria & Palestine. Inland includes
Algezira & part of Iraq & Arabia. The map has a decorative border frame
designed with scrolls and leaves. Published in “The Illustrated Atlas
and Modern History of the World, Geographical, Political, Commercial &
Statistical” by John Tallis in 1850. |

- LONDON MAGAZINE “A Correct Plan of Constantinople With It's Adjacent
Country. From An Actual Survey.” London 1770. Colored. 6½X9½.
Attractive map of the City and Harbor of Constantinople in the late 18th
century. Depicts the Bosphorus Channel leading to the Black Sea. The Sea
of Marmara is at the base of the map & the City is criss-crossed with
streets. Includes the Great Seraglio situated across the water from
Scutaria & the lighthouse at the entrance to the Channel. The title in
top center is surrounded by decorative leaf & scroll motifs & a compass
rose is positioned strategically next to the title. The map was
published in 1770 in the London Magazine, and sold by Richard Baldwin at
his shop “at the Rose in Paternoster Row”, a street in London made
famous for housing printers, engravers, cartographers and publishers in
18th century London.

- JOHN LODGE “A Plan of Constantinople. Places Adjacent and Canal of the
Black Sea. Engraved for the Gents. Mag. Dec.1770.”: London 1770
Colored. 7X9½Very attractive detailed map of the City and Harbor of
Constantinople in the late 18th century. Includes a detailed reference
table of over 100 important places on the map including churches,
palaces, commercial & government buildings, gardens, monasteries, &
country estates. /Depicts the Channel leading to the Black Sea. Locates
the Sea of Mormara or the White Sea & 6 offshore islands. The title in
lower right is in a decorative cartouche ornamented with armorial motifs
such as swords, spears, banners, & scrolls. The map was engraved by John
Lodge (fl.1755-1796) at 45 Shoe Lane, London & published in the
Gentleman's Magazine in 1770. (Note, the map was printed with East at
the top, a technique sometimes used by mapmakers in the earlier
centuries. See the small compass rose on the map)

- G. MILLAR “A General Perspective View of Constantinople, the Capital
of the Turkish Empire.” London. 1782. Colored. 8½X10½. This fine
view of the City and Harbor of Constantinople shows many sailing vessels
in the Harbor & all the tall buildings on both sides of the waterfront.
These buildings are comprised of churches, palaces, commercial
buildings, forts, an arsenal & warehouses. Includes a number of people
either walking or standing around talking, some with dogs while others
are just observing the scene. The view was engraved & published under
the direction of George Millar for his “New & Complete System of
Geography” in 1782.

Olim Asia Minor Nova Descriptio.” Antwerp 1612. Colored. 13X9.
Finely drawn very early map of Turkey with east at the top of the map
sheet locates the islands of Crete & Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea.
Depicts the Dardanelles, the Sea of Marmara & Constantinople & the Black
Sea. Includes hundreds of place names with towns indicated by tiny
drawings of castles & churches. & shows rivers & many offshore islands.
This is a beautiful early map in very good condition , published in
Abraham Ortelius’s “Theatrim Orbis Teatrum” in
1612. On the back is the text for this map plus two others, as this one
was printed on a large sheet with the other two. It was issued as a
vertical map with east at the top to fit the copper plate. |
